Abstract:
Distributed Energy Resources (DER) are becoming increasingly pervasive. Efficient exploitation of their flexibility will play a crucial role in the robustness of the future power system. Scheduling for these devices is subject to uncertainty, e.g. through dependence on the weather or uncertainty of load forecasts. A usual approach for the chance-constrained planning of these devices is to consider uncertainty in the day-ahead schedule and treat short-term re-scheduling of deviations as a deterministic problem because of computation time limitations. Additionally, consideration of correlations between energy resources is limited in these approaches.

The aim of this doctoral project is two-fold. First, to address chance-constraints for short-term re-scheduling of DER. Second, to enable consideration of correlations between DER in this process.

This work introduces the Stochastic Resource Optimization (SRO) problem. Stochastic resources are a general purpose model of energy resources that generate a certain amount of flexibility by a given random distribution and sell that flexibility for an associated cost. The combinatorial optimization problem is to select a subset of available resources that has high enough probability for a given use-case while minimizing the expected cost of buying their flexibilities. Correlations of DER are a core part of this model, included by Copula functions.

The focus of this work is on the fast and decentral solution of SRO problems. This could enable shortterm re-scheduling of DER while considering both chance-constraints and correlations.
