The learning lab
The learning laboratory
Founded as the "wadden sea learning laboratory", our initial focus was exclusively on the "wilderness on our doorstep", i.e. the unique Wadden Sea. Through close collaboration with marine researchers from all disciplines, our thematic focus increasingly opened up to the global significance of the ocean and its central function in the "Earth system". The realisation grew that the threats to the world's oceans have direct negative feedback effects on the entire planet. It became clear that only a comprehensive exchange of knowledge covering the entire ocean can promote the necessary skills for sustainable thinking and action. In order to do justice to this claim, the name was expanded to "lernlabor wattenmeer - KÜSTE, TIEFSEE & MEER". This name now stands for a concept that combines various environmental education measures under one roof and emphasises the importance of a holistic understanding of our seas.
In the spirit of education for sustainable development (ESD), students from various disciplines develop environmental education concepts aimed at different target groups under the guidance of scientists and educationalists. In addition to the practical application of sustainability concepts in environmental education, this interdisciplinary approach also promotes a change of perspective beyond one's own subject.
