| 1882 | Creation of a teaching garden for the Oldenburg Teachers' College. |
| 1913 | The drawing teacher Wilhelm Meyer takes over the management of an additional botanical school garden of 14 acres (see picture). |
| 1916 | Creation of a systematic section in which 1200 plant species from Oldenburg and East Frisia were planted according to family. The systematic section is still a central area of the Botanical Garden today. |
| 1932 | Establishment of four plant geography sections for boreal, Atlantic, Mediterranean and Pontic species, as well as a section for species from the low mountain ranges. |
| 1933 | Takeover of the garden by the state of Oldenburg. |
| 1950 | Transfer of the garden to the state of Lower Saxony and expansion to its current area of 3.71 ha. |
| 1951 | Creation of the phytosociological department. |
| 1966 | Redesign of the phytosociological section with heath, moorland, dunes and woodland. |
| 1967 | Creation of a medicinal garden. |
| 1968 | Establishment of the department for central and southern German plant communities. |
| 1976 | Incorporation of the Botanical Garden into the University of Oldenburg. |
| 1985 | Incorporation into the Department of Biology as a scientific institution. Expansion of the garden by 1.1 ha on Küpkersweg (not open to the public). |
| 1988 | Redesign of the Alpinum according to phytosociological and ecological aspects. |
| 1996 | Redesign of the Mediterranean area according to vegetation aspects. |
| 1999 | Remodelling and redesign of a succulent house. Redesign of the medicinal garden, expansion of the systematic department. |
| 2000 | Creation of a new cottage garden in the entrance area, construction of a new wintering house. |
| 2001 | Redesign and restoration of the phytosociological section with heath, moor and dune. |
| 2002 | Opening of the new depot at the Schützenweg exit |
| 2003 | Creation and redesign of the area around the emergency exit on Philosophenweg |
