The "Green School" - learning while experimenting in the Botanical Garden

A project of the AG Biology Didactics at the University of Oldenburg

Who actually eats all the leaves that fall from the trees in autumn? What does sage help against? How do plants survive high up on trees in the tropical rainforest? These and similar questions are at the centre of the Green School's work. It is open to school classes of all types and ages from Oldenburg and the surrounding area for special teaching units. Experiments can be carried out in the well-equipped classroom of the "Green School", but the actual learning space is the Botanical Garden itself. Here, topics can be dealt with practically that are often not available in school lessons. We are guided by educational standards, core curricula and syllabuses. The topics on offer range from early bloomers and culinary herbs to insects and owls, tropical crops and the adaptation of plants to special habitats (see programme).

With our programme, we try to make a contribution to education for sustainable development (ESD). For the period 2010/2011, the "Green School" was recognised as an official German Decade Project "Education for Sustainable Development".

The "Green School" is a member of the Oldenburg Teaching-Learning Laboratory Association OLELA.

Activity days for children

Anyone who would like to get to know the "Green School" outside of school has the opportunity to do so on several open hands-on activity days. You can find out more under Programme. If you would like to get a small impression of the action days, you are cordially invited to take a look back at past years.
