Series of lectures on intersectional sensitivity using the example of research in teacher training
Winter semester 2022/23
The "Intersectional Sensitivity" series of lectures is an interdisciplinary programme based on the didactics of special needs education, music education and philosophy didactics: The content of the six lectures is centred on diversity, inclusion, migration and multilingualism, intersectional research methods, aesthetic subjects such as music (pedagogy) and gender.
The aim of the lecture series is to sharpen the concept of intersectionality, provide a theoretical and methodological foundation and create a discussion format. The lecture series was developed as part of the diversity audit process at the University of Oldenburg as part of a "diversity-sensitive research" project group and implemented by three junior researchers from the "Teacher Training 2040" research training group (also members of the Intersectional Sensitivity research cluster). The DiZ Research Academy provides the organisational framework for the implementation.
The interdisciplinary nature of the series of lectures provides a wide range of insights into intersectionality research. On the other hand, participants will learn about the importance of intersectionality for educational research and practice from different perspectives. The aim is also to sensitise participants to diversity-sensitive research approaches and methods. Networking between the early career researchers and the visiting researchers with a view to future co-operation is also desirable. Some of the speakers will therefore also offer workshops and seminars for doctoral students.
Prof. Dr Annett Thiele will kick off the first event on 25 October 2022 with a welcome address as Vice President for Early Career Researchers, Equal Opportunities and Diversity (and Professor of Pedagogy for Impairments of Physical and Motor Development and Chronic and Progressive Diseases).
The public series of lectures will take place on the dates indicated from 18:00 to 20:00 in the BIS-Saal (library hall) on the Haarentor campus (Uhlhornsweg). Registration is not required.
Topics and dates
1 "Diversity sensitivity in society and educational institutions"
Tuesday, 25 October 2022: Prof. Dr Karim Fereidooni
In his lecture entitled "Diversity sensitivity in society and educational institutions", Prof. Dr Karim Fereidooni addresses the intersectional construction of 'normality' in our society and in various educational institutions and problematises this construction process because it creates exclusions. He will also present various theories and studies on the topic of diversity sensitivity and present measures that are designed to deal constructively with diversity. The second part of the presentation will look at what 'migration background' has to do with school (mis)success.
Karim Fereidooni is Junior Professor of Didactics of Social Science Education at the Ruhr University Bochum
Prof Dr Annett Thiele will kick off the first event with a welcoming speech as Vice President for Young Academics, Equal Opportunities and Diversity (as well as Professor of Pedagogy for Impairments in Physical-Motor Development and Chronic and Progressive Diseases).
2 "Methodological challenges of ethnographic intersectionality research"
Tuesday, 08 November 2022: Prof. Dr. Jürgen Budde
In the second lecture, the focus will be on schools and teaching in Germany from an intersectional perspective. The heterogeneity of the student body in relation to the prevailing understandings of normativity in schools could also be addressed.
Jürgen Budde is Professor of School Pedagogy at the University of Flensburg
3. "Pedagogical professionalism in the migration society"
Tuesday, 06 December 2022: Prof. Dr Yasemin Karakaşoğlu
The third lecture will deal thematically with intersectional issues of migration, for example with regard to disability or social inequalities.
Yasemin Karakaşoğlu is Professor of Intercultural Education at the University of Bremen
4 "Intersectionality and capitalism: subject-oriented research with the intersectional multi-level approach"
Catch-up date: Tuesday, 25 April 2023: Dr Kathrin Ganz !!!CANCELLED!!!
The intersectional multi-level approach is a versatile tool for subject-orientated and practice-oriented social research. Theoretically anchored in a feminist-materialist social analysis, the approach can be used to empirically investigate how intersectional social inequality is produced and challenged in social practice. The specific focus on interactions between identity constructions, symbolic representations and social structures sensitises students to intersectional social inequality in capitalist societies and can contribute to strengthening individual and collective agency.
In the spirit of sustainable learning, a workshop for early career researchers (especially from the Teacher Training 2040 Research Training Group) is also being organised on 26.04.2023 is planned. The workshop will be led by Dr Ganz and aims at specific methodological training in the sense of trying out and consolidating intersectional multi-level analysis. During the workshop, concrete research material of the doctoral students will be analysed. Individual interpretations will be discussed objectively in the group.
Dr Kathrin Ganz is a research assistant in the Department of Socioeconomics at the University of Hamburg. Current project: "Sociology of the Web3". Focal points: Digitalisation, intersectionality, open access publishing. Publications: "Intersectionale Sozialforschung" (together with Jette Hausotter, transcropt, 2020), "Die Netzbewegung" (Budrich, 2018).
5 "Accents of intersectional educational work in music education"
Tuesday, 17 January 2023: Prof Dr Johann Honnens
The fifth lecture will discuss and determine what contribution the aesthetic subjects can make to the intersectionality debate. This will be illustrated using the subject of music (education).
Johann Honnens is Professor of Music Education at the Cologne University of Music and Dance (HFMT)
6 "Intersectionality from the perspective of Diversity Education and Critical Diversity"
Tuesday, 31 January 2023: Prof Dr Rudolf Leiprecht
The concept of intersectionality is closely intertwined with gender studies and the research discipline draws on the theory and the intersectional perspective (see e.g. Intersectional Feminism; Crenshaw, 1989). In the sixth lecture, the connections between intersectionality and gender will be addressed. In addition, it will examine how actors can act in a more intersectional and gender-sensitive way and how teacher training can be organised accordingly.
Rudolf Leiprecht held the professorship for Social Pedagogy with a focus on Diversity Education at the University of Oldenburg until 30 September 2022. He has been 'retired' since 01.10.2022.
