Information for companions
Specialist mentors are contact persons and sources of inspiration for questions concerning, for example, science, career prospects or professional and personal development. They support the students in
- recognise and develop their individual strengths,
- reflect on academic and professional perspectives,
- pursue their own research or project ideas
- and to shape their path into academia.
The relationship is trusting, active and goal-orientated - with space for exchange, orientation and personal development. In this way, mentors make an important contribution to supporting students who are interested in science.

The following aspects can characterise the support relationship:
- You openly share your professional experiences and proven strategies with the student - the informal, personal facets of your career are also valuable and inspiring.
- You support the student in defining individual professional goals and developing sustainable career strategies.
- You will provide constructive, honest and appreciative feedback and help to recognise potential, the current situation and possible development paths more clearly.
- Together, you will identify future challenges and develop practical approaches to overcoming them.
- You inform the student about relevant events, lectures, projects or further training opportunities.
- You broaden the student's horizons by providing access to your networks and arranging helpful contacts.
Opportunities through (professional) support
(Professional) mentoring offers the opportunity to
- accompany talented students on their path,
- pass on their own experiences and perspectives and reflect on them on the basis of re-registering students,
- to reflect in depth on their own career path,
- to share (subject) knowledge,
- to an intergenerational exchange and to look at new perspectives,
- expand their own coaching and counselling skills,
- strengthen your own leadership and social skills,
- receive new impulses from the student body,
- gain insights into the current challenges, decision-making processes and life situations of students,
- get to know other mentors,
- expand your own network and make new contacts,
- take part in events for mentors
- and to support students as they embark on an academic career.
Your time investment
Honours Support does not mean comprehensive support, but a targeted, solution-oriented exchange within clearly defined framework conditions. The collaboration is based on jointly agreed goals and a timetabled structure. For the successful development of the support relationship with the student, a regular, binding time investment must be planned for the duration of the programme.
- 2-5 meetings per semester
- Personal discussions, reflection meetings, support at the end of projects if necessary
- Contact by email and/or telephone
We know that your time is limited - but we would still like to invite you to take part in the kick-off and closing events. These events not only mark the formal start and end of the support relationship, but also provide a valuable opportunity to share experiences, reflect on the collaboration and recognise the work we have done together as a tandem.
