Research interests

I am interested in the combination of natural sciences and mathematics, and in my work I focus on the mathematical representation of natural phenomena through numerical modelling. The subject of my research is a specific process in the carbon cycle – the storage of carbon in the ocean via the so-called biological carbon pump. In my project, I am investigating the role of microbial processes in the transformation and degradation of sinking particles as they are transported from the surface to the deep sea. By incorporating microbial dynamics into particle-scale models, I derive quantitative estimates of particle flux under changing environmental conditions.

I am a member of the Cluster of Excellence‘The Ocean Floor’.
