Procedure for final theses

Theses (and individual projects/study papers) are organised in our department as follows:

  1. As an interested party, you will first have a non-binding preliminary discussion to find a topic that takes into account the thematic focus of our department as well as your interests and strengths.
  2. Once you have roughly agreed on a topic with us, you will have in-depth discussions with your future supervisor about the scope of the project. From your point of view, you describe the task, the work steps to be carried out, the necessary framework conditions and the planned timetable in a projectproposal. You discuss the draft proposal with your supervisor until all important aspects are included. How quickly this happens is of course very much up to you ;-) - However, it should not take longer than a month.
Only when this project proposal is available and has been finally approved by Prof. Sonnenschein will the thesis be registered with the Examinations Office.
  3. The processing time is four months for a thesis in the BSc programme or an individual project in the Diplom programme and six months for a Diplom or Master's thesis.
At the beginning of the processing time, you will give a short presentation on the task assigned to you. This presentation is intended to familiarise all members of staff and other students who are currently working on a thesis with us with your topic so that they can give you helpful tips if necessary.
  4. During the processing time, you will meet regularly (once or twice a week) with your supervisor to discuss the progress of your work. This way, you will always know that you are "still on the right track".
It is also a good idea to regularly attend our department's advanced seminar (Thursdays 14-16 in room A3 2-209), as you can get ideas for your own work and learn about the expectations of other candidates' final presentations.
  5. The actual final thesis is written in parallel to the substantive work - you will also regularly submit the draft texts to your supervisor.
  6. As a rule, you will give your final presentation no later than one month after submitting your thesis. Based on the problem definition, this will present the solutions investigated and summarise the main objectives achieved.
  7. First and second assessors evaluate the thesis and the final presentation. The grade will be communicated by the Examinations Office shortly after the final presentation.
