Anneke Fengler

Anneke was born and brought up in Quakenbrück, Germany. She completed her BSc and MSc in Biology and Chemistry at the University of Osnabrück, specialising in biochemistry. During her studies, she worked on the processes and protein interactions involved in endocytosis and autophagy in the model organism Saccharomyces cerevisiae. She is currently part of the University Medicine Oldenburg (NUM) network, where she coordinates the Bloodstream Infections module, led by Prof. Dr Hamprecht, and organises the implementation of NUM studies in collaboration with the research team at Oldenburg University Hospital. Within the NUM study network, she acts as the local point of contact and represents the Oldenburg study site in public.

Dr Lubna Patel

Lubna Patel completed her Bachelor of Engineering in Biotechnology in India. She then moved to Germany, where she obtained a Master’s degree in Microbiology at Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich. She subsequently completed her PhD in 2025 at the Max von Pettenkofer Institute in the subject of Medical Microbiology, under the supervision of Prof. Dr Josenhans. Her doctoral thesis focused on bacterial epigenetics and innovative anti-virulence strategies against the gastric pathogen Helicobacter pylori. In September 2025, Lubna moved to the Institute of Medical Microbiology and Virology at the University of Oldenburg, where she is working as a postdoctoral researcher. Her current research focuses on understanding how antimicrobial resistance (AMR) genes are acquired and transmitted in Proteus mirabilis, which causes nosocomial urinary tract infections, as well as on the mechanisms driving the pathogen’s adaptation and virulence.

Dr Mohammed Elbediwi

Dr Mohammed Elbediwi is a postdoctoral researcher in the Department of Microbiology and Virology at the University of Oldenburg. His research focuses on mechanisms of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in ESKAPE pathogens and combines experimental evolution, comparative genomics and One Health surveillance.

Dr Elbediwi’s core research programme utilises experimental evolution and whole-genome sequencing to identify new targets against colistin-resistant Salmonella Typhimurium – a significant pathogen in human and veterinary medicine. His work has identified transcription regulators and metabolic enzymes that had not previously been linked to resistance mechanisms and are currently being functionally characterised using multi-omics analyses.

His broader research interests lie at the interface of microbiology, microbial genomics and One Health surveillance. He carries out AMR monitoring across veterinary, environmental and clinical sectors in various geographical regions and translates surveillance data on resistance into a mechanistic understanding of resistance development. His work has resulted in 37 peer-reviewed publications as well as international research collaborations with several countries.

Julia Brinkhoff

Julia was born in Oldenburg and is currently 24 years old. She completed her Bachelor of Science in Biology, during which she developed a keen interest in genetics, microbiology and the molecular basis of human diseases. For her bachelor’s thesis in human genetics, she worked on the generation of an RPGR knockout in hTERT-RPE1 cells in the context of X-linked retinitis pigmentosa, a hereditary form of retinal degeneration. Through this project, she gained practical experience in molecular biology techniques and genetic engineering approaches.

She then began her Master’s degree in Molecular Biomedicine, during which she completed research modules in immunology as well as medical microbiology and virology. She is currently writing her Master’s thesis in the field of Medical Microbiology and Virology, in which she is working on the generation of bacterial conjugants and their subsequent verification using molecular biological and microbiological methods. Yvonne Stoll from Germany was awarded her BSc in Biotechnology from Beuth University of Applied Sciences in Berlin in 2012. During her bachelor’s thesis, she focused on the field of clinical microbiology. She initially joined the laboratory as a master’s student, working on the spread of resistance genes and plasmids in Gram-negative bacteria, and completed her Master’s in Microbiology at the University of Bonn in 2016.
