A rare, fully English-taught physics degree at a public German university

Why study physics here, and what studying here is actually like

There's no tuition here — as a public German university, only a low semester contribution applies — and student housing stays competitive and affordable in a city where the overall cost of living is low. From year one, students work hands-on with real instruments across optics, electronics, acoustics and computation, inside one of only a handful of fully English-taught physics programmes in Germany. In Oldenburg, access to professors and research groups stays close rather than crowded out.

Classes, labs and exams all run in English, and an International Office plus welcome weeks support you from arrival — while daily German gradually opens up the city around you. Oldenburg itself is flat, green and famously easy to cycle, so getting around rarely calls for a car. It's also one of the more affordable, relaxed student cities in Germany, with low living costs and a strong reputation for being safe.

Two campuses, one university

The University of Oldenburg spans two campuses a short ride apart.

Campus Wechloy

Natural Sciences · Physics. Campus Wechloy is where the B.Sc. Physics programme is based. Home to the Institute of Physics, it pairs modern architecture with dedicated physics and computing laboratories and open green space. Physics: labs and lectures. Modern: purpose-built. Green: open courtyards.

Campus Haarentor

Humanities and more. Campus Haarentor is the historic heart of the university — characterful red-brick buildings, leafy courtyards, and a lively central plaza. It hosts the humanities and social sciences, just a short bike ride from Campus Wechloy. Historic: red-brick campus. Plaza: bikes and blossoms. Nearby: short ride to Wechloy.

What can I do during the semester break?

Work full-time

Between semesters there are no classes — many students take full-time jobs during this window for experience or extra income before the next term begins.

Free intensive German

An optional, free intensive German course runs during the break — a chance to get ahead on the language without it competing with your coursework.

Explore with the Deutschlandticket

Included in your semester contribution, it covers regional transport almost anywhere in Germany — a real excuse to explore beyond Oldenburg during the break.

Take a course from a different department

Curious about neuroscience, computer science, or something else entirely? You’re free to pick electives from other departments — a real way to broaden your knowledge alongside your physics degree.

Leisure & social life keeps going

Hochschulsport, international parties, casual coffee meetups — the university’s leisure programme doesn’t stop just because lectures do.
