OSAMI Commons - Open Source AMbient Intelligence - Software Platform for Flexible Distributed Service Systems

Background

Particularly in the environment of miniature devices, flexibly combinable, cooperating devices and software components have been difficult to implement up to now, since a large number of special, in part proprietary communication protocols and interfaces are often used here. Here, the use of service-oriented architectures (SOA) using accepted, open standards offers a promising solution.

Approach

The goal of the international ITEA 2 project OSAMI is therefore the research and development of a basic SOA-capable component platform as well as its testing and its OSS deployment within the framework of national subprojects with different application areas. The German subproject focuses on the important area of healthcare. Interoperability, maintainability and reliability as well as automated configuration and management of medical devices and service systems are supported so that sick and convalescent patients can receive new and comprehensive assistance. The beneficial applicability of the results is demonstrated with the development of a demonstrator to support outpatient, cardiac rehabilitation.

In healthcare, a great many different standards (communication, data, interfaces) are used, depending on the area of application. Especially for SMEs, their complexity and the associated investments are a significant barrier to market entry. The open, modular and extensible OSAMI platform with its uniform interfaces and comprehensive system functions will drastically reduce this threshold. The increasingly aging population with its associated cost increases requires the efficient and quality-assured development of novel medical devices, services and applications. Home care for nursing patients can thus take on new forms and be substantially improved.

Cooperations / Funding

The project is conducted between 07/2008 to 12/2011 at OFFIS Health Division. It is funded by the BMBF/ITEA2.The official website of the project can be found at OSAMI Commons.
