Ethical and Social Issues of Co-intelligent Sensory Dementia Care (EIDEC)

Motivation

The EIDEC project investigates the ethical, social and technological aspects of co-intelligent sensor and assistance systems aiming to support the care of people with dementia in the home environment. The focus is on the one hand on the analysis and evaluation of ethical acceptability and social acceptability and on the other hand on the identification of the potential of technological aspects.

Background

As a result of demographic change, which is associated among other things with increasing life expectancy, the resulting increased need for care and an already existing gap in care due to the shortage of care professionals, care in the home of people with increasing cognitive impairments or dementia is taking on an important role. Technical innovations, such as new tracking, sensor, and assistance technologies, enable the monitoring and support of the behavior of people with dementia while increasing safety. The aim of these technologies is to ensure independent living at home, to detect any problems that may arise at an early stage, and to relieve the burden on caregivers and relatives.

Approach

In the three-year funded project, the Department of Assistance Systems and Medical Technology is investigating requirements and barriers for the application of CISDEC (co-intelligent sensory dementia care) in two everyday application areas, institutional and home care. The target group of the study is individuals with dementia and cognitive impairment, family members, and professional caregivers and physicians. Their technology assessment and acceptance regarding co-intelligent sensor and assistance systems will be determined in three qualitative interviews based on a theoretical and a laboratory case model as well as a field model.
