RAALI - Roadmap AAL Interoperability

Background and problem/need

In order to meet the challenges of demographic change, a large number of AAL systems are currently being developed. These systems are very specialised due to the different areas of application and the multi-layered demands placed on them. This results in isolated solutions that are not flexible. At the same time, it is necessary for the AAL system to "grow along" in order to meet the changing requirements, e.g. multimorbidity in old age.

Approach

The aim of the RAALI joint project is to address the most important as yet unsolved questions that are necessary for the realisation of interoperable AAL systems and system components, and to make the results of this work available to the German expert public so that future R&D projects and product developments can benefit from these results. Specifically, the need for innovations, product developments, norms/standards and political framework conditions required to solve the interoperability problem are to be identified and published in the form of a roadmap. Furthermore, so-called "use case-based integration profiles" for the most important AAL applications are to be defined and published as examples. Finally, an inventory of middleware platforms for AAL available on the market and their capabilities and limitations will be compiled and also published. This will exemplify the three steps necessary for the development of interoperable systems: The standardisation of interfaces and data structures, the summary and specialisation (profiling) of standards for specific use cases, and the analysis of existing software infrastructure with regard to support for the relevant standards and integration profiles.Since the RAALI project builds directly on the preliminary work of the "Interoperability" working group of the BMBF/VDE Innovation Partnership AAL, the project is to be carried out in close coordination with this expert body. Regular joint working meetings and continuous mutual information on the status of the work are therefore part of the work plan.

Cooperations/Funding

The project is being carried out between 07/2011 and 06/2013 at the OFFIS Health Department. It is funded by the BMBF (project website).
