Design of age-appropriate living environments

Background

Aging poses new challenges to society, not only with regard to the financing of social security systems, which is usually the focus of public discussion, but also, for example, with regard to the framework conditions for successful and productive aging, the care and nursing of the very old, the support of family care options, social participation and, in particular, the maintenance of independence and, in general, the preservation of quality of life. The possibilities for intervening in this field by means of technical developments cover a wide range of areas such as prevention (primary, secondary and tertiary) and rehabilitation, compensation (e.g. for age-typical losses in sensory perception), physical, social and psychological support for the elderly and their networks (e.g. in everyday activities or communication), and last but not least the generation of improved data bases and communication structures for medical research and care.
