Charlie and the chocolate factory

between literary learning and material separation

As part of Svea Coldewey's previous master's thesis, a teaching unit based on the story "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" by Roald Dahl was developed, which includes experiments on separation processes for beginners' chemistry lessons. In the teaching unit developed, the established use of food in chemistry lessons is supplemented by the integration of fictional children's and young adult literature as well as food sensory analyses, so that literary learning is made possible in chemistry lessons. The linking of the various subject disciplines enables innovative interdisciplinary work in chemistry lessons and supports the holistic acquisition of basic scientific knowledge. The designed experiments and the associated materials were evaluated in a selected learning group and the results analysed and discussed in the paper described.
