Master of Education - and then? Alternatives to the academic appointment of a teacher
With the M. Ed., you have obtained a university degree that opens the door to becoming a teacher. However, the goal set at the beginning of the degree programme is not always the goal at the end. The following questions will be addressed in this event:
- What alternatives are there to the original career goal of wanting to become a teacher?
- What have you learnt during your studies that is also relevant for other professional fields?
The aim is to find out how professional orientation works and what is important for a new or reorientation.
Don't panic before your traineeship
The preparatory service marks the start of the second phase of teacher training. Some students look forward to this time with anxiety or even fear. This creates pressure before it has even started. But what triggers these worries and how can they be differentiated? In this event, questions and possible attributions associated with the traineeship will be addressed and initial solutions will be presented.
Doing a doctorate after the M. Ed.

Once you have successfully completed your Master of Education, the preparatory service for your chosen teaching profession can follow immediately. However, you may also need to bridge the time or deliberately not want to start the preparatory service immediately. One option could be to gain teaching experience abroad or to work as a "substitute teacher". You can also find information about this on this page.
Teaching abroad after the M. Ed. programme
The DAAD programme Lehramt.International - Scholarship Programmes offers university graduates with a Master Ed. the opportunity to gain experience in school and teaching in another country for a short period of time (min. one month, max. six months).
Against the background of an increasingly heterogeneous society in which diversity should be lived, getting to know another school system and other living conditions as well as new cultural encounters can significantly promote your intercultural competence and provide experience that can be extremely valuable for your future professional life as a teacher!
Further information can be found here.
Teaching as a substitute teacher
Gaining further experience as a "substitute teacher" for a limited period of time before the preparatory service is not only an opportunity to bridge the time until the preparatory service, but also to visualise your career goal once again. You can find information on applying for substitute teaching positions here:
