Prerequisites and preparation

Preparation

Please note: For the school internships, you must provide the school with a current, extended certificate of good conduct, which takes time to issue. If you are going abroad with plans to complete a school internship immediately afterwards, you must apply for the extended certificate of good conduct on the Internet using the online ID function. Please ensure that this online ID function is activated before you start your stay abroad.

The International Office (IO) can advise you on all questions relating to your stay abroad. The information event "Teaching Abroad" also offers an initial discussion.

Prerequisites

You must contact the relevant contact person (see tabs below) and your responsible administrator at the office of the Centre for Teacher Education - Didactic Centre (DiZ) in advance.

You must also note the following:

  • The same tasks (incl. compulsory elective tasks), requirements, rights and duties as per the examination regulations must be able to be performed.
  • Teachers must be available on site to assist as internship supervisors or mentors.
  • The number of hours and weeks at the school stipulated in the examination regulations must be guaranteed. However, a longer period is recommended, especially in a foreign school system.
  • If you wish to receive credit points for your school abroad internship, you may not take a semester off during the period in which you complete the prx module! You must be regularly enrolled.
  • The accompanying seminar for preparation and follow-up work must be completed in Oldenburg.

(Notification of) independent search for an internship school abroad

  1. Registration must take place within the registration period. The internship must be completed during the implementation period.
  2. The information that the internship is to be completed abroad must be passed on to the DiZ's administration department in good time so that no school is assigned.
  3. The preparatory events must be attended beforehand. For prx102: It may be advisable to contact the ASP team.
  4. For prx102 (ASP): As soon as the school is known, the independently searched school must be reported in good time using the "School confirmation" form of the DiZ.

Insurance cover

  • Health insurance:
Before starting a stay abroad, it is essential to clarify whether - depending on the country of the internship - your own health insurance also covers you abroad. For stays in other countries, it may be advisable to take out private health insurance.
  • Accident insurance:
Accident insurance is not provided by the university or the state accident insurance fund for school internships abroad. This is recommended (please note: this is not travel insurance!).
  • Liability insurance:
You can also consider taking out private liability insurance abroad.

The International Office (IO) can advise you on further questions.

Internationalisation in the teaching profession

Existing co-operations, working groups, etc.

The DiZ was a member of the internationalisation working group of the Lower Saxony Teacher Training Network. As part of this working group, key points and recommendations for action on the topic of internationalisation in teacher training were developed, which the association issued in the form of a recommendation: "Recommendations and catalogue of measures to promote the internationalisation of teacher training at universities in Lower Saxony" (09.06.2017). It is based on a cross-university communication process and serves as orientation for the further development of teacher training degree programmes at universities in Lower Saxony.

The strategy paper on the internationalisation process at the University of Oldenburg focuses on the one hand on measures to increase student mobility and on the other hand on measures for "internationalisation at home" in the area of studying and teaching .

In order to make the opportunities for study-related international experience in teacher training more visible, the various advisory and support units at the university (DiZ, subjects, central study and career counselling, International Office), for example, regularly present themselves at an information event on the topic of "Teaching Abroad". Information is provided on funding programmes, financing options and establishing contacts with schools abroad. The event bundles students' information needs and makes it easier for them to contact the individual players at the university.

Teaching Abroad: School internships abroad

In terms of the curriculum, a stay abroad is only compulsory for students studying a modern foreign language. In principle, however, all students are given the opportunity to go abroad as part of their degree programme: For example, one semester of study or at least one of the compulsory school placements can be completed abroad. The prerequisite for school internships abroad is that they are carried out at the foreign school after consultation with the module coordinators and in compliance with the specified module objectives.

An information event will be organised at certain intervals. Information on this will follow.

DAAD project Lehramt.International: Doing Diversity - Concepts, Approaches, and Methodologies for the Classroom

Enabling student teachers to gain more international experience - this is the aim of a project that the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) has been funding at the University of Oldenburg since 2019. The university is cooperating with Nelson Mandela University (South Africa), Rijksuniversiteit Groningen and NHL Stenden (Netherlands). The internationalisation of teacher training courses is intended to better prepare students for teaching in diverse learning groups.

In addition to scholarships for one-semester stays abroad in South Africa and the Netherlands, the project offers the opportunity to take part in various practice-oriented formats, e.g. research internships, Teaching Across Borders or the language tandem. The programme is aimed at teacher training students, but also students in the two-subject Bachelor's programme who are not yet committed to teaching. It offers opportunities for intercultural exchange; collaboration is ensured through a combination of virtual formats and face-to-face programmes such as the annual Winter School. The focus of the content is based on the main topic of the year, e.g. language-sensitive teaching, racism, inclusion and well-being as well as sexuality and gender.

The project organises regular networking meetings and joint events (guest lectures, workshops, lesson studies, winter schools, intercultural training, etc.).

Further information and testimonials from students who have already successfully enriched their teacher training internationally can be found on the project page:
