Abstract

Implicit theories on causal factors of historical change. An empirical study on students' conceptions

In my dissertation project, students' conceptions are recorded empirically. With regard to the conceptions to be surveyed, it is not the frequency of the individual conceptions that is of interest, but rather which historical explanatory patterns are used by young people. These pre-concepts should serve as a starting point for didactic structuring.

The work is based on the model of didactic reconstruction, in which the technical clarification of lesson content, the recording of pupils' conceptions and the didactic structuring are closely related to each other. The methodological approach is hermeneutic-analytical for the technical clarification and empirical for the recording of the learner perspective. A didactic structure is developed from the results of the recursive analyses.

The collection of implicit theories on causal factors of historical events cannot take place on an abstract level. Therefore, the thematic focus is on industrialisation, which does not exclude the possibility that the young people will also comment on other historical topics. The pupils' ideas, which are to be collected with the help of twelve guided, problem-centred interviews, are compared with historiographical explanations in order to draw conclusions for historical learning on this basis.

The sample consists of ninth-graders from the Hauptschule, Realschule and Gymnasium. In addition, a differentiation is made according to gender and region (Oldenburg and Heidelberg with the respective surrounding area). The evaluation is based on the qualitative content analysis according to Mayring and is carried out with the help of the computer programme atlas.ti. For particularly meaningful text passages, additional conceptual networks are created.
