Dissertation project

Dissertation project: On the relationship between everyday and specialised ideas in the social science domain using the example of immigration and integration

Studies on learner perspectives have so far remained limited in the field of social science learning. This is an unsatisfactory state of affairs, especially if the assumption is made that students' ideas about social science issues are always subject to a life-world influence, the resistance to change of which is widely emphasised. This study therefore sets itself the task of transferring pupils' perspectives - using the example of the learning field of immigration and integration - into a didactically motivated perspective of teaching by critically analysing key social science findings and theories on the subject matter. The results will be used to develop domain-specific strategies for conceptual change and principles for didactic structuring in order to utilise the implicit theories and interests of the students for migration policy and social science lessons and teacher training.

The following questions can be posed for the investigations:

  1. Which implicit theories do students utilise in the course of dealing with migration policy contexts? To what extent are the students' conceptualisation systems diverse in specific areas and within individuals? What assessment of the learning opportunities in the learning field do the analyses allow?
  2. By contrasting the analyses with professionally clarified ideas, the aim is to investigate which basic social science concepts appear to be suitable in order to capture the students' concept systems in relation to the learning process in the migration policy learning field.
  3. Which didactic strategies are of decisive importance for the desired differentiation and change of student concepts in social science (migration) lessons (concepual-change strategies)?

The surveys of learner perspectives utilise qualitative research methods; sampling strategies include learners with and without a migration background as members of the democratic immigration society in the investigations. The evaluation is carried out as a step-by-step and methodically controlled procedure in the sense of a modification of qualitative content analysis in the context of subject-didactic teaching and learning research.
