Ways to raise the profile of teacher training
The key role of teacher training in a rapidly changing, knowledge-based society is being increasingly recognised. Teacher training is expected to produce lecturers who guide their pupils in a flexible, differentiated and forward-looking manner on their journey to becoming self-determined and high-achieving individuals. However, teacher education itself is in a state of flux, and it is far from clear which model meets these requirements and thus delivers high-quality teacher education. Schools of Education, teacher training centres, teacher training faculties and other formats constitute the organisational models, each of which seeks to implement competing visions of high-quality teacher education; yet it is far from clear which model can meet the requirements for a contemporary and high-quality teacher education programme. Furthermore, the question remains as to which model best enables teacher education to establish its own distinct profile at the respective higher education institution. The conference aims to contribute to these questions. In five working groups, the conditions, core tasks, opportunities and specific problems associated with the models will be discussed using concrete examples. The working groups will focus on the following thematic areas: ‘research funding’, ‘the organisation of long-term teaching placements’, ‘teacher professional development’, ‘the Jena model of a placement integrated into the degree programme’ and ‘suitability counselling in teacher education’. The one-day event is being organised by the Lower Saxony Centres for Teacher Education, in collaboration with the ZfL Bremen, at the University of Oldenburg.
