FAQ
About ICUR
What is ICUR?
ICUR is a conference specifically designed for undergraduate researchers, providing a platform for rigorous academic exchange. It operates internationally through a hybrid format that connects multiple in-person venues via real-time video conferencing. Presenters from the same panel can be at different venues or participate online if their institution doesn't host an in-person event (Check the list of our participant institutions here and their contact information here, and get in touch with your Local Coordinator to find out more about specific arrangements for your institution).
The conference is also interdisciplinary, welcoming submissions from any field and organising panels based on themes rather than disciplines, promoting a holistic understanding of knowledge and its diverse impacts (Learn more about interdisciplinarity here).
For more details about ICUR in general, check out the ICUR Portal.
Is ICUR online or in person?
ICUR follows a hybrid format. Students gain international conference experience without the need for international travel and can participate from their home institution.
The University of Oldenburg, as a local organising committee, will host in-person presentations and a poster session for participating students from the University of Oldenburg and the University of Groningen.
Eligibility and Research Scope
Who can participate in ICUR?
We welcome submissions from undergraduate students from the University of Oldenburg and its partner institution University of Groningen who have completed or are expected to complete an independent research project (e.g., a dissertation or summer project) by the time of the conference. Presenters should also be eager to share their findings with a broader, interdisciplinary audience.
Master's students can also participate, provided they present their research from their bachelor's degree (e.g. their bachelor's thesis).
For more details, please check Everything You Need to Know Before Applying on the ICUR Portal, including a section dedicated to the question 'Is my research appropriate for ICUR?
Will I be able to participate in ICUR while studying at the University of Groningen?
Yes, if you are studying at University of Groningen, you can participate in ICUR. When submitting your abstract, select 'University of Groningen' as your home university. If your abstract is accepted, you will have the opportunity to present your research in the form of a poster or spoken presentation at the University of Oldenburg.
I completed my bachelor's degree at the University of Oldenburg and am now enrolled at another university. Can I still apply via the University of Oldenburg?
No. Eligibility requires current enrollment at the University of Oldenburg (or the partner University of Groningen) during the application period.
Can we participate as a group?
Yes, but if you are submitting as a group, one student member of your team must be nominated as the lead presenter. Postgraduate students are welcome to present with their undergraduate colleague, as long as the undergraduate member of the team is the lead presenter.
Application Process and Timeline
What do I need to prepare before applying?
You should have:
- A clear research topic
- A short abstract (maximum 250 words)
- Names of any co-authors
- Make sure that your project team is aware of participation (if presenting a group work)
Presentations and Conference Format
What presentation formats are available to students presenting at the University of Oldenburg?
Students at the University of Oldenburg may apply for:
Spoken presentations
Poster presentations
You may select more than one option during application. Final allocation is made by ICUR upon acceptance.
What is the difference between a spoken presentation and a poster presentation?
Spoken presentation: A spoken presenter will be assigned to a panel of 3-4 presenters with the same research theme. Each presentation will be no longer than 10 minutes in length, followed by a 5-minute Q&A session. Of course, we encourage you to continue conversations into the breaks and beyond the conference - this is what typically happens! Tips for developing a spoken presentation is available in the Student Resource Hub on the ICUR Portal.
Poster presentation: A poster presenter will feature their poster alongside others in the poster gallery for in-person audiences and on Oxford Abstracts for remote audiences. During poster sessions, in-person audiences can walk around the gallery, look at the posters, and ask questions. The presenter will explain their research, answer questions, and discuss their findings with anyone interested. Remote audiences can access the posters via our online poster gallery on Oxford Abstract, post comments on individual posters, and interact with the presenters anytime. Tips for developing a poster presentation are available in the Student Resource Hub on the ICUR Portal.

What is a hybrid conference?
A hybrid conference combines a live, in-person gathering with a virtual, online component. This allows participants to attend either in person or remotely, for example if they are participating from another country.
While in-person attendees enjoy face-to-face interaction, virtual participants can engage via chats and Q&As during the session.
This hybrid event gives students from the University of Oldenburg and those from the University of Groningen the opportunity to present their research findings on site at the University of Oldenburg. Students giving spoken presentations will be streamed live worldwide, enabling them to be seen in real time at other universities. Additionally, students giving live presentations will appear alongside students from other universities in a session. Costs and Academic Value
Does participation cost anything?
No. Participation in ICUR is free of charge. The conference is designed to minimise financial barriers, particularly by avoiding mandatory travel.
I study at the University of Groningen and I need to travel to Oldenburg for the conference. Is there any financial support available?
Yes, financial support for travel and accommodation costs is available to students who have been accepted to participate in the ICUR conference and present their research at the University of Oldenburg.
Is ICUR graded or part of my degree programme?
No. ICUR participation is not graded and does not replace coursework. It is an extracurricular academic opportunity that complements undergraduate study.
How is ICUR useful for my career?
ICUR helps students develop transferable skills valued across many academic and professional career paths, including professional communication, public speaking, international collaboration, and interdisciplinary problem-solving.
ICUR is also designed to fit alongside undergraduate study. Most students complete the application and preparation alongside their regular coursework. Participation supports the development of academic writing and presentation skills that are useful during undergraduate study and beyond, without replacing or adding formal coursework requirements.
