About ICUR
What is ICUR?
ICUR is a conference designed specifically for undergraduate students, offering a platform for in-depth academic exchange. It is held internationally in a hybrid format that connects several in-person venues via real-time video conferencing. Speakers on the same panel may be based at different locations or participate online if their institution is not hosting an in-person event (a list of participating institutions is available here. Their contact details are available here; please contact your local coordinator to find out more about the specific arrangements at your institution).
The conference also has an interdisciplinary focus and accepts contributions from all disciplines. The panels are organised thematically rather than by discipline, thereby promoting a holistic understanding of knowledge and its diverse implications (further information on interdisciplinarity is available here ).
Further general information on ICUR can be found on the ICUR portal.
Does ICUR take place online or in person?
ICUR follows a hybrid format. Students gain international conference experience without having to travel abroad. They can take part from their home institution.
The University of Oldenburg, as the local organisational unit, will host in-person presentations and a poster session for participating students from the University of Oldenburg and the University of Groningen.
Eligibility and Scope of Research
Who can take part in ICUR?
We welcome submissions from students at the University of Oldenburg and its partner institution, the University of Groningen, who have completed or are expected to complete an independent research project by the time of the conference (e.g. a PhD thesis or a summer project). Speakers should also be prepared to present their findings to a wider, interdisciplinary audience.
Master’s students may also participate, provided they present research from their Bachelor’s degree (e.g. their Bachelor’s thesis).
Further details can be found under ‘Everything You Need to Know Before Applying’ on the ICUR portal, including a section on the question‘Is my research appropriate for ICUR?’.
Can I take part in ICUR if I’m studying at the University of Groningen?
Yes, if you are studying at the University of Groningen, you can take part in ICUR. When submitting your abstract, select ‘University of Groningen’ as your home institution. If your abstract is accepted, you will have the opportunity to present your research in the form of a poster or an oral presentation at the University of Oldenburg.
I completed my bachelor’s degree at the University of Oldenburg and am now enrolled at another university. Can I still apply via the University of Oldenburg?
No. Only students who are enrolled at the University of Oldenburg (or its partner institution, the University of Groningen) during the application period are eligible to apply.
Can we take part as a group?
Yes, but if you are submitting as a group, one student member of your team must be nominated as the lead presenter. Postgraduate students are welcome to present alongside their undergraduate colleague, provided that the undergraduate member of the team is the lead presenter.
Do I need to have research experience to apply?
No. ICUR is designed for research at Bachelor’s level. Study projects, Bachelor’s theses, laboratory investigations, design projects and exploratory research projects are all suitable.
What sort of research can be presented?
Research from all disciplines is welcome. The conference has an interdisciplinary focus: papers from any field are welcome. The panels will be organised by theme rather than by discipline, in order to promote a holistic understanding of knowledge and its diverse implications.

Students at the University of Oldenburg may apply for:
Oral presentations
Poster presentations
You may select more than one option during the application process. Final allocation is made by ICUR upon acceptance.
What is the difference between an oral presentation and a poster presentation?
Oral presentation: An oral presenter will be assigned to a panel of 3–4 presenters working on the same research topic. Each presentation will last no longer than 10 minutes, followed by a 5-minute Q&A session. Of course, we encourage you to continue discussions during the breaks and after the conference – this is what usually happens! Tips on preparing an oral presentation are available in the Student Resource Hub on the ICUR Portal.
Poster presentation: A poster presenter will display their poster alongside others in the poster gallery for in-person attendees and on Oxford Abstracts for remote attendees. During poster sessions, in-person attendees can walk around the gallery, view the posters and ask questions. The presenter will explain their research, answer questions and discuss their findings with anyone interested. Remote audiences can access the posters via our online poster gallery on Oxford Abstract, post comments on individual posters, and interact with the presenters at any time. Tips for preparing a poster presentation are available in the Student Resource Hub on the ICUR Portal.
I have some questions about the composition of the panel. Who should I contact?
Before the conference, you will be assigned a panel facilitator who will inform you about the schedule for the presentations and the practice sessions, provide you with feedback on your presentation, and answer any questions you may have about the timetable and dress code.

What is a hybrid conference?
A hybrid conference combines a live, in-person event with a virtual, online element. This allows participants to attend either in person or remotely, for example if they are taking part from another country.
Whilst in-person attendees benefit from face-to-face interaction, virtual participants can engage via chats and Q&As during the session.
This hybrid event gives students from the University of Oldenburg and those from the University of Groningen the opportunity to present their research findings on site at the University of Oldenburg. Students giving oral presentations will be streamed live worldwide, enabling them to be viewed in real time at other universities. In addition, students giving live presentations will appear alongside students from other universities during a session. Students from other universities will join them online here at the university and can interact with the presenting students.
Costs and Academic Value
Does it cost anything to take part?
No. Participation in ICUR is free of charge. The conference is designed to minimise financial barriers, particularly by avoiding compulsory travel.
I’m studying at the University of Groningen and I need to travel to Oldenburg for the conference. Is there any financial support available?
Yes, financial support for travel and accommodation costs is available to students who have been accepted to take part in the ICUR conference and present their research at the University of Oldenburg.
Is ICUR a graded module or part of my degree programme?
No. Participation in ICUR is not graded and does not replace coursework. It is an extracurricular academic opportunity that complements undergraduate studies.
How can ICUR help my career?
ICUR helps students develop transferable skills that are valued across many academic and professional career paths, including professional communication, public speaking, international collaboration and interdisciplinary problem-solving.
ICUR is also designed to fit in alongside undergraduate studies. Most students complete the application and preparation alongside their regular coursework. Participation supports the development of academic writing and presentation skills that are useful during undergraduate studies and beyond, without replacing or adding to formal coursework requirements.
