What is ICUR?

The International Conference of Undergraduate Research is an annual hybrid conference celebrating excellence in undergraduate research worldwide.

But ICUR is more than a conference.

It is a year-round programme of training and support for academic and professional development, from abstract submission through to presentation. It is an internationally immersive opportunity for students to network with and learn from the perspectives of like-minded undergraduates from all over the world – crucially, without students needing to travel internationally in order to benefit from these experiences and connections. Above all, it is a supportive yet rigorous research experience, helping students to develop their confidence and professional skills in communication, presentation, and engagement.

Key Benefits of Participating in ICUR

Interdisciplinary research

At ICUR, we are convinced that the questions and challenges of our time are interdisciplinary. This means that they cannot be answered by a single person working in a single field: we need people with diverse knowledge, different skills and a wide range of life experiences to discuss and conduct research together.
That is why ICUR is an interdisciplinary conference. It is not about presenting your work to a specialist audience (although they will be there too!). Rather, it is about reaching out to new audiences from different fields and disciplines, and thinking about how you can communicate your work to people who have never heard of your topic before. We believe your research is important – and ICUR offers you the opportunity to communicate this. Read our introduction to interdisciplinarity and consider how your research can reach different audiences!

International Connection

ICUR provides a platform for students to engage with peers worldwide, fostering connections that go beyond academic disciplines and geographical boundaries. Students from around the globe have the chance to discuss their research with their peers, gaining exposure to diverse perspectives and expanding their understanding of different fields. ICUR presenters have the opportunity to network with like-minded individuals and to see how similar issues are approached differently in various cultural and academic contexts.

  • “Being able to ask students on the other side of the world questions about their research. Through this technology, I have been exposed to research fields that would have otherwise been hidden from my knowledge.”
  • “The best part about ICUR was meeting new like-minded people who are interested and passionate about scientific research. It was also highly motivating to receive feedback on my presentation.”
  • “Presenting on a global scale is a tremendous opportunity... it will help build a profile as a researcher and equip young researchers with skills and boost one's confidence in research.”

Academic and professional development

ICUR is an invaluable platform for improving presentation and communication skills, which are crucial for future academic and professional endeavours. The experience of presenting research to an international and interdisciplinary audience boosts self-confidence, encourages critical self-reflection and provides a supportive environment in which to refine one’s own research work based on feedback

  • “The three ICURs I have attended so far have certainly played a part in my decision to pursue a PhD. They gave me the confidence I needed and helped me develop the skills required for this.”
  • “It was a great opportunity to improve my presentation skills. I felt that my research was genuinely valued and I thoroughly enjoyed the experience.”
