Facts and figures

  • Degree: Master of Science
  • Duration: 3 semesters
  • Start: annually in the summer semester, bridge semester in the preceding winter semester if necessary
  • Language: German and English
  • Admission-free, but special admission requirements

General information about studying at the University of Oldenburg can be found on the pages of the Admissions office. Direct access to the Marine Sensor Technology application procedure and all relevant information can be found on the study programme page of the InfoPortal Studium.

We have summarised some important information for you below.
We look forward to receiving your application!

Admission requirements

Admission to the programme is regulated by the admissions regulations. The Master's degree programme in Marine Sensor Technology is admission-free and can be started in the summer semester.

The admissions regulations state, among other things, that a previous degree programme with a total of at least 210 credit points is suitable. This is fulfilled, for example, with a Bachelor's degree in Marine Engineering or Mechatronics with a focus on Marine Engineering from Jade University. The subject-specific suitability of the previous degree programme also requires course content in fields relevant to marine technology amounting to at least 90 credit points. In particular in the fields of oceanography, biological oceanography, materials science, design, manufacturing, embedded systems, Computing Science, electronics, programming, measurement or control engineering. If necessary, missing competences must be made up in the previous winter semester, the so-called bridge semester.

Language skills

German language skills
Applicants whose native language is not German and who have neither a German university entrance qualification nor a first university degree in a degree programmes taught in German must demonstrate sufficient knowledge of the German language for the course.

English language skills
English language skills are essential for the Master's degree programme in Marine Sensor Technology in order to understand specialist lectures and courses held in English, to write texts in English and to conduct specialist discussions in English. Applicants whose native language is not English or who have neither an English university entrance qualification nor a first university degree taught in English must also provide proof of sufficient knowledge of English at level B2 for the degree programme.

Detailed information can be found in the admissions regulations and on the language requirements page of the InfoPortal Studium.

Applicants with a six-semester Bachelor's degree (180 CP)

Degree programmes with a total of at least 180 credit points may be suitable subject to the proviso that missing competences relevant to the Master's degree programme in Marine Sensory Science, amounting to 30 credit points, must be made up in a bridging semester. The admissions committee determines the modules to be taken in the bridging semester for each applicant individually and depending on the competences acquired to date. These usually take place at the University of Oldenburg or the Jade University of Applied Sciences in Wilhelmshaven.

Applicants without a German university entrance qualification

Special application procedures and application deadlines apply for applicants without a German university entrance qualification. Please contact the International Office.

Consideration and recognition of other entry qualifications

The degree programme is open to graduates of the Jade University's Bachelor's degree programme in Marine Technology, comparable degree programmes or career changers. Particularly in the case of graduates from other degree programmes or career changers, the admissions committee carefully examines whether the existing competences are sufficiently close to the Bachelor's degree in Marine Technology and whether the external achievements can be recognised as qualifications for the Master's degree programme in Marine Sensor Technology. The rules for the selection procedure are set out in the admissions regulations.

Students can apply for the recognition of achievements that have been completed at other universities or externally, provided that these basically correspond in content and scope to the modules of the subject-specific examination regulations for Marine Sensor Technology. Recognition includes an examination of the level, scope, quality, profile and learning outcomes (see general examination regulations). Non-academic achievements, such as practical work experience, specialist examinations from related training and further education can be recognised up to a maximum of 50% of the credit points to be acquired in the Master's degree programme, provided that the necessary scientific basis is available and equivalence exists. If insufficient evidence is provided, a knowledge test may be required.
