Frequently asked questions (FAQ)

Frequently asked questions

Is my degree suitable as admission requirements?

A previous degree programme in environmental sciences, marine engineering or another suitable degree programme is generally suitable if it has provided in-depth skills, particularly in the areas of physics, mathematics, chemistry, biology or technology, amounting to at least 90 credit points. The decision as to whether the admission requirements are met by the respective applicant, in particular whether a degree programme is suitable for the subject, is made by the responsible admissions committee. The admission procedure is regulated in the admissions regulations.

How is my application decided?

The formal decision on admission is made by the admissions committee on the basis of a case-by-case assessment. The procedure is regulated in the admissions regulations

Why can you only start in the summer semester in exceptional cases and what is an exceptional case?

Starting in the summer semester is specified as an exceptional case because the introductory courses in the individual areas are only offered in the winter semester. This means that if you start in the summer semester, you cannot start with the introductory courses, but would then take them in the second semester. An exceptional case, which is usually recognised by the admissions committee, is, for example, if there are several months between the Bachelor's degree and starting in the winter semester. Such a gap can also arise due to a stay abroad, so that a start in the summer semester is approved.

What does "interdisciplinary marine research" mean?

"Marine Environmental Sciences is an interdisciplinary degree programme with geochemical, physical, ecological, microbiological, technical and theoretical aspects.

What is the aim of the degree programme and what are the career prospects?

The Master's in Marine Environmental Sciences is very strongly research-oriented and is characterised by a high degree of interdisciplinarity and proximity to the researchers at the ICBM. Many of our graduates aim to do a doctorate afterwards and are spread across the various marine research institutes in Germany, often making contact with them during their studies, e.g. through an environmental science research project (UFP, usually in the 3rd semester).

Can I have courses from another Master's programme recognised?

Application for the recognition of previous examination results from other degree programmes can be made to the Examinations Office(see examination regulations §8). A decision on recognition is made by the examining board.
Information on the recognition of modules in Germany and abroad can be found here.

Can I have courses from my Bachelor's degree recognised (e.g. courses that I did not need for my Bachelor's degree)?

Bachelor's courses are generally not recognised in the Master's degree programme. On proposal, modules worth up to 24 CP from other degree programmes can be taken at other universities in Germany and abroad, provided they are equivalent in level to the MSc. Marine Environmental Sciences and complement the qualification in accordance with §2 of the examination regulations in a meaningful way. The examining board must confirm the eligibility for recognition before these modules are taken. The proposal for module allocation can be submitted informally to the Chair of the Examination Board.

How do I find a place on the environmental science research project (UfP)?

All information is summarised in the guidelines for the environmental science research project .

Where can I find further information about the degree programme?

Information on examination matters can be found on the university's website for the degree programme. Content-related information can be found on the ICBM website for the degree programme and via the student advisory service.
