In detail

The Master's degree programme in Marine Environmental Sciences (Muwi for short) comprises 120 credit points (CP). It is made up of the compulsory area and the compulsory elective area.

Compulsory area

The compulsory area comprises the Introduction to Marine Environmental Sciences module (6 CP) in the 1st semester, the Environmental Science Research Project module (12 CP) in the 3rd semester and the Master's degree module (30 CP) in the 4th semester.

Compulsory elective area

The compulsory elective area comprises modules from the following areas

  • Mathematical modelling
  • Ocean, climate and environmental physics
  • Geochemistry, analytics
  • Biology, Ecology
  • Marine sensor technology and operational oceanography
  • Practice
  • Interdisciplinary

A total of twelve modules must be selected in the compulsory elective area (12 x 6 CP in total), of which at least one module must be taken from each of the first five areas . From the compulsory elective area of practice a maximum of three modules may be taken.

For students who have not yet studied content from some areas in their previous Bachelor's degree programme, a selection from the following modules is recommended for the first semester:

  • mar353 Fundamentals of Mathematical Modelling
  • mar356 Ocean-Climate-Environmental Physics
  • mar357 Marine and Geochemistry
  • mar359 Biological oceanography
  • mar478 Basics of marine sensor technology
