Applications and Methods

The occuring flow phenomena at wind turbines are highly complex and not fully understood up to now. Computational Fluid Dynamics allows the investigation of full flow flieds around wind turbines and therefore a detailed insight.

The simulation of wind turbines in the atmospheric boundary layer require for example the modeling of turbulences and the resolution of rotating, flexible rotor blades. To fulfill these requirements, we develop various tools in combination with the flow solver OpenFOAM in this group.

The focus of our work will be presented in the following:

Grid generator
Fluid-Structure Interaction
Turbulent Inflow
Turbulence Models

Furthermore, the results of CFD can be used for further applications, like optimization or for hybride BEM-CFD models.
