Why do I have to go to school in prison?
Is there homework in prison? What do you have to do to go to prison - is skipping school enough?
Questions like these are on the minds of many young people and this is exactly what Dr Annika Krause was able to talk about as part of the "meet a scientist" format of the XperimenT! research centre NorthWest for pupils on 21 April 2026 at a special school in the district of Oldenburg.
Dr Krause gave insights into life behind bars, forms of teaching and challenges in everyday life and showed that education can also open doors behind the walls.

Book project: "Youth detention in Germany: short-term educational impulses and legal framework conditions"
Dr Annika Krause is working together with Prof Dr Jens Borchert (Merseburg University of Applied Sciences) and Christoph Beyer (Miteinander e. V.) on a book project entitled "Jugendarrest in Deutschland: Kurzzeitpädagogische Impulse und rechtliche Rahmenbedingungen".
The project brings together a variety of perspectives on detention and the opportunities and limitations of short-term educational work. Colleagues from various specialist disciplines, professions and practical institutions contribute their experiences, analyses and assessments to a broad, multi-perspective understanding.
Publication is planned for the end of 2026.

XperimenT!: meet a scientist
As part of the "meet a scientist" format of the XperimenT! research centre NorthWest for pupils, Dr Annika Krause was a guest at a secondary school in Oldenburg on 28 January 2026.
With her lecture "Learning behind bars. Second chances in prison", she gave the Year 8 pupils exciting insights into a world that is normally hidden behind high walls. A lively dialogue ensued in which the young people were able to ask numerous questions. This form of science communication proved to be a great benefit: it was directly linked to the current teaching topic and made research results more vivid and much more accessible for the pupils.
