Researching the educational processes of pupils with a special educational focus on intellectual development
Duration: 10/2025 - 03/2027
Funding: EWE Foundation
Head: Dr Theresa Stommel
Short description: The project investigates the educational processes of pupils with a special educational focus on intellectual development (sop. SP GE) and aims to develop pedagogical-didactic concepts for (inclusive) teaching. It explores the questions: How do educational processes manifest themselves in pupils with the sop. SP GE and how can these processes be described? To what extent can conclusions be drawn from the findings for the development of pedagogical-didactic concepts for the implementation of (inclusive) teaching with pupils with the sop. SP GE? Which pedagogical-didactic approaches and measures can be derived from the findings on educational processes? The overarching goal is to sustainably improve the educational reality of pupils with sop. SP GE and to reduce exclusion. Data will be collected using phenomenological vignettes to answer these questions. Consequences for didactics are derived from the findings.
Inclusive Pedagogy in Music Education: A Comparison of the Perspectives of Teachers Across Primary and Special Education Schools in Germany and Türkiye
Duration: 12/2024 - 01/2026
Funding: Cologne International Forum
Management: Dr Theresa Stommel; Dr Gözde Özenç İra; Prof. Dr Lukas Bugiel
Short description: Our initiative, hosted by Dr Theresa Stommel and Dr Lukas Bugiel in collaboration with Dr Gözde Özenç İra, aims to explore the perspectives of primary and special education teachers in Germany and Türkiye on inclusive music pedagogy and curricular decisions. Our project directly addresses the challenges and opportunities of inclusive music education. We will explore how teachers in both countries understand social cohesion and inclusion in music teaching, how their curricular decisions impact educational justice, and how these insights can guide future teaching practices. To do this, we will analyse documents, conduct online surveys, and hold face-to-face interviews with primary and special education teachers to better understand their approaches to social cohesion and inclusion in music education. Additionally, we will compare the music curricula in Germany and Türkiye to understand how they address the educational needs of disadvantaged children, especially those with learning disabilities and immigrant backgrounds. Our findings will help improve teacher training programmes in both countries, drawing on the knowledge of music and special education.

Brief description:
Since October 2023, Ausbildung mittendrin has been cooperating with students on the Bachelor's degree programme in Special Needs Education at the University of Cologne. Using Responsive Peer Learning, students and (prospective) apprentices jointly pursue the goal of their own professionalisation and academic appointment. In addition to the application of didactic knowledge, the development of an inclusion-oriented attitude is at the centre for the students. Critical reflection is to be facilitated by means of phenomenological vignettes. Through individualised learning opportunities, the apprentices expand their work-related skills and provide peer feedback to the students. The poster presents the concept and initial results of the peer learning project.
