2022-05-25 17:00 W15 1-146 (Online) | ICBM-Kolloquium Oceanic turbulence as driver for the air-sea gas exchange Dr. Leonie Esters (Department of Earth Sciences, Uppsala University, Sweden) An accurate description of the processes that drive the exchange of climate gases between the atmosphere and water reservoirs such as the oceans and lakes is crucial for climate predictions. In order to estimate the rate of the gas exchange, we need to describe the efficiency of the air-water gas flux, in form of the gas transfer velocity, k. The amount of measurements of the k is limited as it is challenging to measure it directly in the field. During this talk, the description of the k and its drivers are investigated for the open ocean (cruise in the North Atlantic) and lakes (freshwater lake in mid-Sweden). Both types of water bodies imply different challenges when it comes to understand and describe the driving processes of k. For the oceans, a physical description of k based on measured turbulence is explored. For the lake, the surrounding land causes additional difficulties to conduct measurements of k. During the talk an attempt is presented to correct measured gas flux from potential land-based effects. | Dr. Ribas Ribas |
