Onboarding and counselling
Onboarding for doctoral candidates in the social sciences and humanities
A warm welcome to all new PhD students in the social sciences or humanities at the UOL! We are delighted that you have found your way to 3GO, the Graduate School for the subjects of Schools I to IV.
Through our onboarding programme, we’ll support you in actively shaping your transition into the PhD phase. The aim of this process, which runs throughout the semester, is to enable you to work on your thesis with plenty of curiosity, enthusiasm and vigour, whilst at the same time settling into university life as smoothly as possible.
Depending on whether you have just completed your degree, are returning from parental leave, have recovered from an illness, or have gained professional experience outside academia, the individual challenges you face will vary. In addition to the academic requirements (governed by the relevant doctoral degree regulations), your relationship with your supervisor (governed by the supervision agreement) will play a major role in the coming years. You may also be preparing to take on a teaching role (governed by your employment contract) and wondering what is meant by participation in university self-governance.
The 3GO onboarding programme not only explains the doctoral degree procedure and the formal framework governing the doctoral programme, supervision and employment relationship. Rather, we view academia as a (shapable) world of its own, with many written rules but even more unwritten ones, which researchers come to understand during their doctoral studies. At the centre of this modular programme are therefore elements of coaching, mentoring and peer advice/exchange, which you can tailor to your individual needs over the course of a semester.
