German Studies courses: Important information about the registration procedure

Which courses may/must I attend?

We urgently ask you to note this: The Institute for German Studies provides each and every student with a place in courses in accordance with the modules to be taken in the respective subject-specific annex (FSA) German Studies/German. However, the Department of German Studies cannot guarantee you a place in your preferred courses. If you have not been allocated a place in your preferred course or module, please switch to another course or module that you are allowed to take in accordance with the FSA that applies to you.

How do I register for courses in German Studies?

The allocation of places in German Studies courses is carried out in consultation with the Institute Director and the German Studies student body in almost all modules in a procedure that no longer requires students to be sitting at their computers at the start of registration.

Seminars, tutorials, exercises and colloquia are limited in number of participants in accordance with the quantitative teaching standards set by the Presidential Board.

We have provided detailed information on the enrolment procedure for you here.

Please read the information on the linked page and all the information on this page very carefully. Here you will also find a table with the exact registration times for each module.

Hardship cases

General information on the hardship provision

If you wish to make a hardship claim, please proceed as follows with regard to enrolment for German Studies courses:

  • Please send anemail to between 1 July and 31 August at the latest (for the following winter semester) or from xx.xx. to xx.xx. (for the following summer semester), i.e. before registration for the courses begins, to with the subject "Hardship application", in which
    • you informally apply for a hardship provision to be applied to you;
    • you state your Stud.IP user name. Please note: this is not your email address. You will find the user name when you log in to Stud.IP, click on "Profile" and then on "Personal details". It has the form of "EMustermann" or "EMustermann1". The user name is required so that we can clearly identify you in Stud.IP.
    • Be sure to attach proof (birth certificate, severely disabled person's pass, ...) of the existing hardship case to this email.
  • Please note: Incomplete and late proposals cannot be considered!

Otherwise, please enrol for the German Studies courses as normal(see notes here). You will be included in a list in Stud.IP that is not visible to the outside world and this will be added to the registration procedure in such a way that your enrolment requests (see description of registration procedure) will be given top priority.

A new proposal must be submitted for each semester!

Please note:

A long journey to the university or a professional activity cannot be considered a case of hardship!

There is no general entitlement to consideration of a hardship application; it depends, among other things, on the available capacities in the courses.

The application applies to German Studies courses that take place in the degree programmes offered by the subject. For other subjects, please enquire about the regulations in the respective subject or School. (All relevant information for the educational science modules in the PB can be found at https://uol.de/fk1/studium/bildungswissenschaftliches-curriculum/organisation-der-module.

If you have applied for a Master's degree programme for winter semester 25/26, please note the information at https://uol.de/germanistik/lehrveranstaltungen-germanistik-anmeldeverfahren/hinweise-wechsel-in-master. These apply to all students applying for a Master's degree programme in German Studies for winter semester 25/26, regardless of hardship applications. .

Delayed admission to the degree programme

Have you been admitted late to the German Studies programme? First of all, we would like to congratulate you on receiving a place to study German Studies!

As your admission has been delayed, please contact the Institute for German Studies as soon as possible by email ( germanistik@uol.de ), even if you have not yet received a Stud.IP login.
If possible, please include your telephone number in your email and also let us know whether you already have access to Stud.IP. We will either contact you by telephone or, if you already have access to Stud.IP, we will arrange a consultation appointment with you by email.

Please send us your timetable.

If you have been admitted to a higher semester, please also send us an overview of any modules you have already completed at other universities. It is sufficient to provide an overview of the module numbers according to the Oldenburg examination regulations after crediting.

If the question of recognition has not yet been clarified: The contact person at the Institute for German Studies for this is
Prof. Dr Jörg Peters.

(The above information applies to German Studies. For the educational science modules - area of specialisation PB - you will find all information at uol.de/fk1/studium/bildungswissenschaftliches-curriculum/organisation-der-module.)

Last semester of study

Last semester means:

You are
- in the Bachelor's programme at least in the 6th semester or
- in the Master's programme at least in the 4th semester
and complete your studies by the end of the semester with 180 CP (Bachelor's including Bachelor's thesis) or 120 CP (Master's including Master's thesis).

  • No application is required!
The application procedure is set up in such a way that higher semesters are automatically prioritised.

Therefore, please enrol for the German Studies courses as normal(see notes here). If you have exhausted all admission options permitted by the examination regulations that apply to you but have not been offered a place, please send an email ( ) during the clearing phase at the end of March. Please email your Stud.IP timetable and an overview of all modules you have completed in German Studies so far (module number is sufficient)

The dates for the clearing phase can be found on the left of this page (left column = view on PC; on the tablet or smartphone the page appears in one column, please scroll accordingly).

Co-operative students

If you are a cooperative student, i.e. you are studying at the Universities of Oldenburg and Bremen, you can apply for a hardship case. Please proceed as described under "General information on hardship provision" when registering for German Studies courses.

I cannot attend the 1st meeting - what should I bear in mind?

You have been allocated a place on a course or module and are unable to attend the first session? Then please note the following:

In the first week of the semester, the lecturers of courses with limited attendance will check who is missing from the course without having at least contacted the lecturer by email and signalled their interest. These persons will be removed from the course.

The following applies to advanced modules: Students who are absent from at least one of the two compulsory components of an advanced module in the first session without having signalled their interest will be removed from the module. This also applies to students who are on the waiting list for a course from summer semester 20 in accordance with the decision of the Institute Council on 6 November 2019. (last Institute Council resolution on this procedure: 25/06/2025).

In addition, the rules for active participation according to point 2 (1) "Active participation (according to § 9 para. 5 BPO new)" of Annex 9, subject-specific annex German Studies of the BPO apply.

I no longer want to take part in an event - do I have to do anything?
Yes, ...

If you are registered for a course but are no longer interested in attending, please deregister immediately so that your fellow students can move up from the waiting list.

In the case of advanced modules, please do not forget to deregister from the associated exercise or the second associated seminar. Deregistration from the associated tutorial/seminar is not automatic!

Thank you!

I would like to swap my place with a fellow student.
Is that possible? - No...

It is not possible to swap places! With almost 2,000 German Studies students, we are unable to implement this. Therefore, please refrain from making such requests!

Are there waiting lists?

Waiting lists are set up for each limited-participation event, which are usually limited to 10 people. Experience has shown that longer waiting lists make no sense; they only raise hopes that cannot be fulfilled.

If you did not get a place in the lottery procedure, you can still register for courses that did not fill up in the lottery procedure until 19 April 2026. (Details on the registration procedure here).

I am on a waiting list - what happens next?

Students who are on a waiting list may come to the first session of the course, provided they are on waiting list places 1 to 20, but must be aware that it will only be decided after the first session whether they will be allowed to attend permanently. It is therefore strongly recommended that you look for an alternative course/module in good time.

In the first week of the semester, the lecturers of courses with limited attendance will check who is missing from the course without having at least contacted the lecturer by email and signalled their interest. These people will be removed from the course or from the waiting list after the first session. The regulation on signalling interest therefore also applies to students on the waiting list (Institute Council resolution of 6 November 2019).

The following applies to advanced modules: Students who are absent from at least one of the two compulsory components of an advanced module in the first session without this signalling of interest will be removed from the module.

After the first session, students from the waiting list who have signalled their interest in the course to the lecturer once by email will move up to the vacant places in the order of their place on the waiting list, provided that there are no more cases of hardship to be considered (see top left). Afterwards, i.e. after the first session of the respective course and at the latest shortly before the second session, the corresponding waiting list will be deleted! Students who were on the waiting list will be informed by email that they have been removed from the waiting list. From the second session onwards, only those students who are on the regular list of participants may take part in the course.

Students who are registered for a course but are no longer interested in attending are asked, in the interests of fairness, to unsubscribe immediately so that students from the waiting list can move up. (In the case of advanced modules, please do not forget to deregister from the associated exercise or the second associated seminar).

Students who are neither on the list of participants nor on the waiting list for a course in the first week of the course because there are no more free places are not allowed to take part in the desired course.

Please unsubscribe if you do not attend the event!

Dear students,

Unfortunately, it happens again and again that students decide not to take part in a course but do not deregister from this course in Stud.IP. Please think of your fellow students who are on the waiting list and would like to attend this course for the sake of interest and unsubscribe from the course immediately after you have made the decision to no longer attend or, in the case of firmly linked courses, from both (!) courses.

Thank you very much!
