Everyday Textile Culture Collection
The "Textile Everyday Culture" collection of the Institute of Material Culture focuses on everyday objects and their history. It comprises around 7,850 objects and is divided into five sub-collections: Clothes and Stories, Textile Objects, Fabrics and Writings and Dyeing Drugs.
Textiles mean something different to everyone. It is never possible to grasp all these messages - from style quotations to political symbols, from individual memories to knowledge of material and production methods - from the outside. The STAK endeavours to collect the personal meanings of things, which is why they are an equal part of the collection alongside the actual objects. The personal meanings are secured via contextual materials such as photos of wearers or patterns through to comprehensive interviews with the former wearers.
