The orientation week takes place from 6-10 October 2025, i.e. the week before the start of the lecture period. During this week, we would like to introduce you to the degree programme, the university and the place of study. The main actor is the student body Environmental Sciences (i.e. your older fellow students), which is preparing various activities. The student advisory service will present the degree programme in general and the first semester in particular. In addition, there are central information offers from the university on the degree programme in general.

Starting your studies for first-semester students
General information for first-year students about studying at the Carl-von-Ossitezky University and in Oldenburg.

Here you will find some general information and notes on the courses on offer. Detailed information from the lecturers can be found in StudIP under the courses.

• The courses start on Monday, 13.10.2025.
• The courses on offer will usually be activated in the course of September in the study information portal StudIP . This can take place at different times (depending on the responsible Institute).
• The courses in the first semester are compulsory. There will be places for all students (see below). During the orientation week, we will inform you about everything you need to know about the winter semester, the courses on offer and how to register for them in StudIP. So don't rush to register for the courses.
• Special preliminary courses are not offered. We trust that the range of lectures, tutorials, exercises and learning centres will be able to accommodate first-year students with different levels of knowledge.
• Free WLAN is available everywhere at the university (EDUROAM). For StudIP access, you will need your identifier (format: abcd1234) and password. Info for the institution: Access to the campus network.
• Time information: Normally courses start with an "academic quarter hour", e.g. 10 c.t. means that the start is at 10:15. This time is given without minutes and/or with the addition "ct" (cum tempore). There is also "st" (sine tempore), 10 st means 10:00 am.
  • Different starting times are indicated with hours and minutes, e.g. 10:30 h.
  • The courses are usually organised in a 2-hour time grid, with one teaching hour lasting 45 minutes.
  • Unfortunately, StudIP is often inconsistent when it comes to timings. Even if c.t. is started, StudIP often indicates the full hour with minutes (of the time grid) (10:00-12:00 or 10-12, but start is 10 ct, i.e. 10:15, end 11:45).
• Elective options: The first two semesters consist of compulsory courses. There is only a selection of dates for exercise or practical groups. There is only a selection of content for the UOP (Environmental Science Orientation Project) and for the knowledge of forms courses in the 2nd semester. We will provide you with more detailed information on the various options available from the 3rd semester onwards.
• It is important to avoid overlaps when choosing dates. If courses are offered more than once, there are always alternative options. With mutual consideration, this is not a problem. Groups are usually allocated via StudIP or at preliminary meetings.
• If preliminary discussions take place, participation is strongly recommended. These often take place in the first lesson, sometimes extra dates are announced. Please deregister if you are registered for courses that you do not attend.
