Information on the course programme (1st semester)
The courses of the winter semester 2025/26 start on 13 October 2025.
A course info on the BSc Environmental Sciences, by our course coordinator Dr Marion Pohlner will take place on Tuesday, 07.10.2025 from 10-12 am in W32 0-005 (experimental lecture hall).
All courses of the 1st & 2nd semester are compulsory courses, for this reason there is also a place in these courses for all first semester students. So your timetable is already fixed, you don't have to worry about anything in advance & don't worry if you don't have Stud.IP access yet.
In addition, for the O-week we have organised a Stud.IP introduction and will introduce you to your timetable. It is perfectly sufficient to register in Stud.IP only then.
What is the O-week?
The O-Week ("Orientation Week") always takes place one week before the start of the lecture period. This year it is the week from 6-10 October 2025.
During this week, you will have the opportunity to find out more about your degree programme and the university, get to know other students and be shown the most important places in the city.
We, the Environmental Sciences student body, are mainly responsible for your programme. There will also be information about your course of study from the course counselling service and central information events organised by the university.
This week is designed to make it easier for you to start your studies

Events mentioned may take place at other times or not at all...Further information will follow at the start of the semester.
Do I have to take preliminary courses at the university at the beginning of my degree programme?
No. The university does offer preliminary courses in maths, physics and chemistry, but these are aimed at the respective subject students. The content goes beyond what is relevant for first-semester undergraduates. The lectures in maths, chemistry and physics that you attend in the first and second semesters are basic lectures that do not require or presuppose any special prior knowledge.
For maths, the online maths bridge course is recommended, either before the start of your studies to refresh your knowledge or to repeat topics during the course.
Will there be support for the compulsory modules?
Yes.
Maths: In addition to the lecture, there is a tutorial in which tasks are solved and exercises that you submit in advance are discussed. You can collect bonus points for the written exam if you solve the problems well.
There is also a learning centre that takes place weekly and offers you support in solving the tasks.
Physics: As with maths, there is also a tutorial where you can discuss the exercises you have submitted. If you solve the exercises well, you can collect bonus points for the written exam.
There is also a learning centre here, which takes place every fortnight.
Bio: There is a learning centre every week in which the content of the lecture is discussed again.
Chemistry: There are also exercise sheets here, but these are not handed in and assessed, but only discussed together in a tutorial.
Tutorials & learning centres are led by Uwis or students from the respective subject areas. They are in higher semesters and have already learnt the content.
Exercises are discussed in the tutorials, but you also always have the opportunity to ask other questions about lectures.
Which books should I buy for my studies?
If books are required, this is usually discussed in the first lectures of the various courses. Many books are now available online via the university library or you can find them second-hand on the university's Stud.IP notice board. You get access to this as soon as you are enrolled. It is also advisable to contact students from higher semesters, they may be able to lend you their books :)
So it's best to wait until the start of the semester to buy your books!
Are there any other materials or aids that I need in advance?
No, as with the books, you will be told everything you need in the respective courses. For example, magnifying glasses can be purchased during the identification course and lab coats from the chemistry student body.
It is also worth asking other year groups or visiting the notice board.
