Wir möchte Sie und Euch zum zweiten Workshop in der Reihe “Wie sprechen wir über Rassismus?” des Instituts für Musik einladen. Hierfür konnten wir Nate Holder gewinnen. Im Juli 2020 (keine zwei Monate nach dem Tod von George Floyd) veröffentlichte er ein Gedicht mit dem Titel „If I were a racist…“. (Video)
Vier Jahre später wurde daraus ein Buch, das zeigt, wie sich Rassismus und White Supremacy in die Musikpädagogik eingeschrieben haben.
Der Workshop baut auf den Thesen des Buches auf und findet in englischer Sprache statt.
Sein Buch „If I Were a Racist“ ist eine kritisch-reflexive Auseinandersetzung mit Rassismus in der Musikpädagogik. Anhand der Darstellung Afrikas, der Verflechtungen der europäischen klassischen Musik mit dem transatlantischen Sklavenhandel sowie von DEI (Diversity, Equity, Inclusion) und Notation bietet er kritische Einsichten und einen sozial-historischen Kontext, um die allgegenwärtigen Auswirkungen von Rassismus und white supremacy in der zeitgenössischen Musikpädagogik zu verstehen.
Nathan Holder is an award-winning author, international speaker, musician, and education consultant who champions inclusive and diverse music education. With over a decade of experience, he has led CPD training, workshops, and lectures in schools and universities, addressing pedagogy and critical perspectives. Nate has collaborated with artists like Ghetts, KOKOROKO, and Emeli Sandé, and worked with organisations such as BBC, Hal Leonard Europe, and Oxford University Press. He currently serves on the boards of F-flat Books, APME, City of London Sinfonia, and Black Country Music Hub, and his band, Between Worlds, has been featured on BBC Radio. Nate regularly performs around the world, and he has authored twelve books, including Where Are All The Black Female Composers, If I Were A Racist and the award-winning Listen and Celebrate, inspiring educators and learners to embrace diversity in music education.
