Working title of the PhD project

The professional perspective in physical education

Abstract

The planned doctoral thesis on the ‘professional gaze’ (Goodwin, 1994) in physical education aims to explore this aspect of teachers’ expertise in a sport-specific context in greater depth. This concept, which has so far been applied primarily in the context of eye-tracking studies in traditional classroom settings, will be examined here against the backdrop of the great complexity involved in perceiving highly dynamic teaching situations in the context of sport. At the heart of the project is, on the one hand, the investigation of eye movements and the associated focus within the teaching context. Furthermore, the positioning and reflection on the lesson situation are to form part of the study. This multidimensional investigation of the professional gaze is to be conducted across different levels of lecturers’ expertise, with the findings meaningfully implemented into the professional development process of lecturers.
