Thailand, Pathum Thani: Asian Institute of Technology

Application

The academic year at the Asian Institute of Technology is divided into several terms. Term 1 (January to June/July) and Term 2 (August to December). There is also the possibility of shorter stays, which can be arranged individually (only applies to students of the AIT School of Management). Only Master's students of economics can apply to study at the Asian Institute of Technology for one semester free of tuition fees. Oldenburg students only have to pay a registration fee at the AIT.

Applications for the exchange programme are accepted in May and June for the following (calendar) year.

You must submit an English language certificate (at least level B2) with your application.

Study

The Asian Institute of Technology (AIT) was founded in 1959 and is an international university in Pathum Thani, Thailand. It specialises in engineering, advanced technologies, sustainable development, management and planning. It aims to promote "technological change and sustainable development" in the Asia-Pacific region through higher education, research and outreach. The AIT has been consistently ranked as the best university in the world due to its "international orientation".

Today, around 2,300 master's and doctoral students from more than 50 countries are studying in 32 fields of study in the areas of technology, environment and management. Teaching and research are closely interlinked with practice. The Institute's campus is located directly next to the Rangsit Centre of Thammasat University in Pathum Thani, about 40 km north of the centre of Bangkok. The Pathum Thani Science Park is also not far away. In addition to the campus in Thailand, there are other branches in Vietnam (AIT Centre Vietnam, in Hanoi since 1993).

1 AIT credit involves 15 hours of study. 1 AIT credit corresponds to 2.5 ECTS.

Everyday life

The cost of living in Thailand differs from that in Germany. For a single person, you should calculate around EUR 450-550 per month, although this does not include rent. The Numbeo website offers a rough guide, where you can find various details on everyday products.

Accommodation is provided in campus flats. You should calculate around EUR 70 per month for a normal room. The room usually includes air conditioning and a communal room for cooking and socialising. More information on housing can be found on the campus accommodation facilities page.

Local health insurance can be purchased for around EUR 40 per month, which covers standard treatment in local hospitals or dental surgeries. It is possible to waive this offer if a German health insurance certificate is provided.

Formalities & interesting facts

All visa issues are handled by the Government Relations Unit (GRU), which deals with visas for international students. As part of the application process, Oldenburg students are informed directly by the AIT about procedures and contact persons. It is generally advisable to make contact with the Thai embassy (e.g. in Berlin) in parallel with the GRU in order to clarify the most important questions. You can apply for a visa at the earliest 3 months before travelling. An entry visa is valid for three months from the date of issue. The applicant must have entered Thailand within this period.

You are strongly advised to take out additional international or travel health insurance. You should also check any other insurance policies you may have (accident and liability insurance).
