Study

Osaka Metropolitan University is located in the city of Osaka, one of the largest cities in Japan, and is an important economic and cultural hub. It was founded in 2007 when Osaka Prefecture University and Osaka City University merged. This created a larger and more diverse institution for higher education.

OMU offers a wide range of degree programmes in various disciplines, including humanities, sciences, engineering, medicine, economics and social sciences. The university is divided into various Schools and Graduate Schools to provide a comprehensive academic experience. Osaka Metropolitan University's campus offers modern facilities including libraries, laboratories, lecture theatres and sports facilities. There are currently approximately 17,000 students studying at OMU.

Everyday life

Osaka is part of the larger Osaka-Kobe-Kyoto metropolitan region, also known as the Kansai region. It is home to over three million people.

The city is known for its vibrant cultural scene and has a rich history and tradition in kabuki theatre, bunraku puppet theatre and rakugo (comedic storytelling). There are also numerous modern entertainment options such as shopping centres, restaurants, bars and nightclubs.

Excitingly, Osaka is often referred to as "Japan's cuisine" and is famous for its street food culture. The city is particularly known for dishes such as okonomiyaki (a type of savoury pancake), takoyaki (fried squid balls) and kushikatsu (deep-fried skewers). There are countless restaurants and food stalls where you can sample these delicacies.

Formalities & interesting facts

A visa is required to enter Japan. This can be applied for at the Japanese embassy. At Narita, Haneda, Chubu and Kansai, New Chitose, Hiroshima, Fukuoka and Tokyo airports, a residence card is issued upon entry into Japan.

Health insurance (NHI), which all students who stay in Japan for more than 3 months must take out, costs around 13 euros per month. In the case of doctors or hospitalisation, 70% of the costs are covered.

You are strongly advised to take out additional international or travel health insurance. You should also check any other insurance policies you may have (accident and liability insurance).
