Study

The National Chi Nan University (NCNU) in Puli, Nantou, is a public university in Taiwan. It impresses with its size and location: the picturesque, open campus extends over 150 hectares and is home to around 6,000 students. With around 11% international students, it is also a melting pot of cultures.

NCNU's history is characterised by resilience: founded in 1995 with the mission of promoting regional development and education, it was almost completely destroyed by the severe Jiji earthquake in 1999. The successful reconstruction under its own steam has strengthened the university's identity in the long term and cemented its community spirit.

Its academic structure is clearly organised. The foundation is formed by four colleges covering a wide range of subjects: Humanities, Management, Science & Engineering and Education. NCNU combines a high quality education in an inspiring environment with a special history and a clear international focus, making it an attractive place to study.

The university offers numerous clubs and activities. For international students, there are opportunities for part-time jobs, often in language teaching (English or other European languages). Volunteering, for example in local community projects, is a great way to get to know the community and improve your language skills.

Everyday life

Studying in Taiwan offers a fascinating mix of cutting-edge education and deeply rooted culture. Away from the vibrant metropolises such as Taipei, Puli is located in the heart of the country, in the district of Nantou. For students, especially at the National Chi Nan University (NCNU), it offers a unique and affordable living environment that is rich in opportunities.

One of the biggest advantages of studying in Puli is the comparatively low cost of living. In contrast to the expensive big cities, it is very easy to live here on a student budget. The cheapest option is the halls of residence on the NCNU campus, which often only cost between NT$10,000 and NT$15,000 (approx. €285-430) per semester. Those who prefer their own flat or a shared room in the town of Puli will find offers from around NT$5,000-8,000 (approx. €140-230) per month.
Taiwan is a paradise for foodies, and this also applies to Puli. A full meal in one of the many local canteens or small restaurants rarely costs more than NT$80-150 (approx. €2.30-4.30). The famous night markets offer countless tasty and inexpensive snacks. With a monthly budget of 6,000-9,000 NT$ (approx. 170-260 €) for food, you can get by very well.

Within Puli, a scooter is the most popular means of transport and very cheap to maintain. However, there is also a good bus network. Long-distance buses and trains are available for trips to other parts of Taiwan and are affordable for students. Compulsory health insurance is very cheap at around NT$826 (approx. €24) per month and offers excellent medical care.

Overall, students in Puli can expect to spend around NT$15,000 to NT$25,000 (approx. €430-715) per month, which is well below the European average.

Surrounded by mountains, Puli is a dream for outdoor enthusiasts. The world-famous Sun Moon Lake is just a short bus ride away and is ideal for cycling and boating. Numerous hiking trails, such as the one to Hehuanshan, offer spectacular views and the rare opportunity to see snow in Taiwan. Puli itself is home to important cultural sites such as the Chung Tai Chan Temple, one of the largest Buddhist temples in the world. The proximity to villages of indigenous peoples provides authentic insights into Taiwan's original culture.
