School meets anatomy

29.11.2023

Last week, 16 students from the Ammerland vocational schools visited the Department of Anatomy at University Medicine Oldenburg (UMO) to find out about teaching, research and possible career paths in this specialism. Together with their teacher Julia Engbers, the eleventh-graders explored Prof Anja Bräuer's department with its research focus on molecular and cellular neurobiology and the anatomical teaching content in various thematic blocks.

Let's get physical: anatomy in the digital age

In series such as "Grey's Anatomy" and "In aller Freundschaft", doctors fulfil the ideal image of the medical role. They are approachable and emphatic and also possess immense anatomical expertise that helps them to heal their patients. But how did they learn to do this so well? This is exactly the question we ask ourselves every day in anatomy. How can we impart fundamental core knowledge to budding doctors that they can later apply successfully in their academic appointments? Find out how a Dr House learnt his anatomy and immerse yourself in the classic, digital and virtual teaching formats of anatomy.

First "Tour de Faculty" a success

12.12.2022

Full house in the laboratories of the departments of Prof Ulrike Raap(Dermatology/Allergology) and Prof Karin Loser(Immunology) (W16), Prof Bernhard Rauch(Experimental Pharmacology) (W03) as well as Prof Stefan Schrader(Ophthalmology) and Prof Anja Bräuer (Anatomy/Molecular Neurobiology) (W34) on 16 November 2022. Anja Bräuer(Anatomy/Molecular Neurobiology) (W34) on 16 November 2022. From 2 p.m. to 6 p.m., visitors were able to look around the premises on the Wechloy campus, get to know the respective work and discuss it with the professors and their staff. Around 200 visitors took advantage of this offer, including many students from the Human Medicine, Neuroscience, Physics, Technology and Medicine (PTM) and Molecular Biomedicine degree programmes as well as numerous colleagues from the various departments of School V and VI. Food and drink was also provided: in addition to waffles, biscuits and popcorn, there was children's punch and mulled wine.

Microscope instead of circular saw

02.12.2022

The former carpentry and metalworking rooms on the ground floor of building A03 are buzzing with activity. First-semester medical students at 64 workstations peer intently through the eyepieces and search for flat, cubic and cylindrical epithelial cells on the specimens. Instead of heavy tools, there are modern microscopes on the tables in two of the three newly renovated rooms; instead of being characterised by craftsmanship, this area is now dominated by histology. A large partition wall in the centre has been pushed back so that the two almost identically constructed rooms merge into one large microscopy room for this event.

New microscopy room completed

16.11.2022

A new 200 square metre microscopy room* has been created in the former carpentry and metalworking rooms on the ground floor of the A03 building on the Haarentor campus of the University of Oldenburg. So that it can be used for different courses, it can be flexibly separated into two roughly identical individual rooms using a partition wall.
