Research at sea
Dr Thomas Badewien, Institute of Chemistry and Biology of the Marine Environment (ICBM)
If you want to explore the world's oceans, you have to go out on them: There are more than 20 research vessels in Germany alone - from the large research icebreaker "Polarstern" to the small research boat in the Wadden Sea. But how do scientists actually work on such a ship? How do they take water samples from a depth of 6,000 metres? What happens if someone is seasick? And what do the researchers do on board when they are not conducting research?
The lecture takes you on an expedition across the oceans - from the icebergs of Antarctica to the blue water deserts of the tropics and the East Frisian Islands. You'll also learn why ocean explorers mustn't be forgetful when packing their suitcases and that it's Sunday twice a week at sea.
