Acidification of the oceans
Welcome to the first kitchen experiment. This is all about the problem of ocean acidification. Watch the video on this topic first:
Now that you have learnt about the causes of ocean acidification, you can investigate the problems it causes in your own kitchen laboratory at home.
You will need the following materials:
- 3 glasses
- 2/3 coffeecoffee spoon
- Measuring jug
- 3 small pieces of lime, e.g. mussels
- 150ml tap water
- 300ml carbonated water
- table salt
- lemon juice
Once you have all the materials in front of you, you can get started.
First, pour 150ml of tap water into the first glass. Pour 150ml of carbonated water into each of the other two glasses.
Then add a teaspoon of table salt to each glass and stir until it is no longer visible. The first and second glasses are now ready.
Add three teaspoons of lemon juice to the third glass and stir well again.
Now all the glasses are ready and a piece of one of your chalky pieces, e.g. the mussel, is placed in each one.
To imitate the conditions in the sea, carefully swirl the glasses in a circle one after the other to simulate waves. Observe what happens to the pieces of lime for 10-15 minutes. What do you notice?
