20th International Carl von Ossietzky Composition Competition
The Carl von Ossietzky Composition Prize was announced for the twentieth time by the Institute of Music at the University of Oldenburg. The ensembles for which the competition is organised change from year to year. In this way, a growing repertoire of compositions of medium difficulty is continuously created, bringing together pupils, students and amateurs from different styles to play together.
The 20th Carl von Ossietzky Composition Prize was awarded for works for piano and symphonic orchestra. 49 works from 10 countries (Germany, Czech Republic, Austria, Italy, France, Romania, Russia, Canada, Chile, Brazil - from three continents) were submitted. The jury (Christiane Abt, Werner Barho, Violeta Dinescu, Christoph Keller, Rida Murtada, Roberto Reale and Michael Searby) has decided to award prizes to the following compositions:
With the announcement of the 20th International Composition Competition 2020, the
Institute of Music at the University of Oldenburg aims to expand the repertoire
of contemporary music of medium difficulty.
For 2020, the Institute of Music is organising the competition for
compositions for piano and symphonic orchestra
The following orchestral instrumentation must not be exceeded:
2-2-2-2; 2-2-0; 1 or 2 percussionists; strings
With regard to the orchestral part, the pieces submitted should offer advanced
pupils, committed amateurs and students challenges and interesting
experiences and should not exceed a medium level of difficulty
in terms of playing technique. There are no technical limitations with regard to the piano part.
Performance time: maximum 10 minutes
It is possible to submit several works. The compositions should not yet have been published by
or premiered. There is no age limit.
The content of the works is optional.
The works with a commentary are requested anonymously in duplicate,
and a sealed envelope containing the name and address of the sender and
a short curriculum vitae. Entries can only be sent by post to

The jury will award three main prizes (1. The jury awards three main prizes (1st prize: 1,000 euros, 2nd prize: 700 euros, 3rd prize:
500 euros) and a sponsorship prize (300 euros) for young composers (up to 25 years of age),
as well as honours and repertoire prizes. Compositions by participants up to
25 years of age should please mark their scores with an F (for sponsorship award).
The performances of selected works under the artistic direction of Rida
Murtada and Werner Barho will take place at the end of the summer semester 2021 in the auditorium of the
University of Oldenburg.

for Piano and Symphonic Orchestra
With the announcement of the 20th International Composition Competition 2020 the
Institute of Music of the University of Oldenburg intends to contribute to
the expansion of the repertoire for contemporary music of a medium level of difficulty.
In 2019 the competition is announced for works for piano and orchestra.
The following orchestral instrumentation should not be exceeded:
2-2-2-2; 2-2-0; 1 or 2 percussionists, strings
The orchestral part of the submitted composition should not exceed a medium level of
difficulty, but still offer opportunities for advanced pupils and students to be musically
challenged and make profitable experiences. Regarding the piano part there is no
limitation to the level of difficulty.
Duration: max. 10 minutes
It's allowed to submit more than one composition but the works should neither have
already been published nor performed. There is no limitation of age of the participants.
With regard to the content of the piece there are no specifications.
Please, submit three copies of the composition anonymously, as well as an anonymous
commentary of your composition. Please, also send a closed envelope containing name
and address of the composer, as well as a short CV (biography). Submissions are only
accepted by mail (post) - no email!
