Hybrid teaching

What is hybrid teaching?

Hybrid teaching formats give participants the choice between on-site participation in person and online connection. There are various options, the most common of which is the synchronous hybrid session, i.e. some participants are on site and there is a simultaneous online video conference. However, it is also possible to record a face-to-face event and then make the recording available to other participants at a later date (asynchronous).

Hybrid courses combine face-to-face and online sessions in different ways:

  1. Online and face-to-face sessions alternate.
  2. All events take place synchronously in person and online.
  3. Mixture of both approaches.

What technical options are there for implementing hybrid teaching formats?

When planning a hybrid course, the necessary technical equipment depends on various factors:

  1. How large is the event room and what are the technical requirements there?
  2. How many participants are expected?
  3. What level of interactivity is aimed for? (e.g. presentation by an individual compared to a seminar with group work or discussion of a topic).

This results in various options, ranging from a completely mobile all-in-one solution to a combination of permanently installed technology with different (throw) microphones.

We recently presented the technology acquired as part of the participate@UOL project and its application for different teaching/learning scenarios in a practical workshop for teachers and summarised it for you in two pdf documents.

Please feel free to me if you have any questions.
