The European Research Network on Education in Prison brings together a diverse community of researchers and practitioners from across Europe. The members of the network come from different academic disciplines and academic appointments and deal with the complex issues of education in prisons. Both theoretical perspectives and practical approaches are taken into account, with the aim of deepening understanding and improving educational programmes for people in prison.

Origin

The network was founded in 2025 by Prof Dr Jens Borchert (Merseburg University of Applied Sciences) and Dr Annika Krause (University of Oldenburg). It works independently and is currently organised and managed by both of them.

Theaim of the network is to connect researchers from all over Europe and to promote the exchange of knowledge and best practices in the field of prison education.

The central tasks of the network are

• Establishing and maintaining contacts with researchers and practitioners in Europe
• Sharing knowledge and experience on education in correctional facilities
• Joint development of approaches to effectively transfer research findings into practice in correctional centres

Education in prison

By education in prison, we mean a broad spectrum of learning and support programmes, including

• Formal and informal learning environments within prisons
• Basic education and literacy courses (including language courses for non-native speakers)
• Vocational training and qualifications in various trades that enable people in prison to obtain recognised certificates
• General education and further education programmes
• (Special) educational support needs
• Digital skills and e-learning platforms

Research colloquium

The network meets once a quarter for an online colloquium. Current research findings are presented, ideas are discussed and new perspectives are developed.

The next colloquium of the European Research Network on Education in Prison will take place online on 31 March 2026 at 16:00 (CET).
