Mire protection for dragonflies & butterflies

Conservation of raised bogs in NW Germany with special consideration of selected insect orders (dragonflies and butterflies)

Raised bogs can be categorised as sites with highly specific site factors and characteristic plant and animal species adapted to them. However, only a very small proportion (3 %) of raised bogs in Germany can be categorised as intact or little affected and are therefore considered to be highly endangered. Previous management concepts for the renaturalisation of raised bogs are mainly based on vegetation and hydrological studies. There is a lack of well-founded studies on raised bog fauna, especially dragonflies and butterflies. There are only a few studies and concepts relating specifically to these two species groups in the context of raised bog restoration.

The aim of the project is to analyse the status of dragonfly and butterfly species typical of raised bogs in the Diepholzer Moorniederung (Lower Saxony) and, based on this, to derive mission statements and evaluation criteria as well as recommendations for action for raised bog restoration and protection.

The project is being carried out in co-operation with the following partners:

European Centre of Expertise Moor and Climate GmbH

BUND Diepholzer Moorniederung

Naturschutzring Dümmer e.V.

District of Diepholz

District of Vechta

Sponsorship: German Federal Environmental Foundation (DBU)

Duration: 01.01.2017 to 30.04.21

Final conference of the project "Conservation of raised bogs in NW Germany with special consideration of selected insect orders (dragonflies and butterflies)"

The multi-year project "Raised bog protection in NW Germany with special consideration of selected insect orders (dragonflies and butterflies)", funded by the German Federal Environmental Foundation (DBU) and carried out in co-operation with BUND Diepholzer Moorniederung, Naturschutzring Dümmer e.V., the districts of Diepholz and Vechta and Europäisches Fachzentrum Moor und Klima GmbH, comes to a close in the middle of the year.

The aim of the project was to survey and assess the dragonfly and butterfly fauna in the Diepholzer Moorniederung, paying particular attention to species typical of raised bogs. Two assessment systems were used comparatively and - using biotope-specific mission statements - recommendations for action were formulated for optimised renaturation and maintenance based on these two species groups.

The conference will cover a wide range of topics, from the current state of knowledge on the butterfly and dragonfly fauna of north-west German raised bogs to exemplary measures for the conservation and promotion of these two animal groups in raised bogs.
