FFH dragonfly species

FFH dragonfly species

Species support programmes for selected FFH dragonfly species in NW Germany

Fragmentation, isolation and loss of suitable habitats are leading to a sharp decline in plant and animal species in Central Europe. The species green mosaic dragonfly(Aeshna viridis), as well as the helmeted and bird's-eye damselflies(Coenagrion mercuriale and C. ornatum) are among the most endangered dragonflies and are protected throughout Europe. As part of a multi-year study, the regional distribution is being recorded and the population structure and size, habitat use and dispersal behaviour of the species are being analysed. Based on this, possible protection, maintenance and development measures are planned and trialled.

The project area for the green mosaic damselfly is located in grassland ditch systems in the Hunte and Weser marshes (Lower Saxony). The project area for the helmeted damselfly and the azure damselfly is located in ditch systems in the Minden lowlands (North Rhine-Westphalia).

The project is being carried out in co-operation with the following project partners:

  • District of Wesermarsch
  • District of Oldenburg
  • City of Oldenburg
  • Minden-Lübbecke district
  • Stedingen drainage association
  • Wüsting drainage association
  • Große Aue water association
