Diplom thesis: Determination of an action-orientated IT reporting system

Reports serve to provide company management with both operational and strategic information.

Controlling in general and reporting in particular is no longer conceivable without the help of IT. However, IT must also be planned, monitored and controlled accordingly with the available resources. Here, not only monetary key figures must be clearly presented in edited form, but also project and performance key figures of the existing infrastructure and the applications used. Unfortunately, this is where companies all too often fail in practice, which is ultimately also due to the fact that the works already published on this topic unfortunately focus too much on the types of reports rather than on the implementation of reporting for IT controlling, which also offers possible measures that a decision-maker only has to select and delegate. An automated response to deviations from tolerance values stored in key figures is almost completely neglected by the providers of reporting tools.

The aim of this thesis was therefore to work out how an IT reporting system should be structured. The key figures provided by KPIs and IT KPI systems must be flexible and customisable to the management needs of a company.

It should also be analysed how a reporting system can be adapted to the individual requirements of individual managers.

As the regular reporting of too many key figures can quickly cause report recipients to lose sight of the essentials, the aim is to show ways in which only the information that requires action can be reported and in what form this should be done.

Due to the large number of reporting tools and tight IT budgets, many IT managers find it difficult to decide whether to introduce appropriate software. Here, we will analyse and evaluate some products that meet the requirements identified in this paper.
