PG Big Data Archive: Data science for the energy transition
The DAvE project group introduces itself
30.05.2017
On 3 April 2017, the DAvE (Data Archiving of Energy Data) project group on the topic of "Big Data Archive: Data Science for the Energy Transition" was launched under the leadership of Prof. Dr.-Ing. habil. Jorge Marx Gómez and supervised by Dr Andreas Solsbach, Viktor Dmitriyev and Jad Asswad.

The project group consists of the eleven participants: Maged Ahmad, Julian Brunner, Alexander Eguchi, Jens Feldhaus, Nils Meyer, Jakob Möller, Miriam Müller, Yasin Oguz, Henning Schlotmann, Martin Sonntag and Helge Wendtland.
Over a period of one year, the research question of what a data-driven energy market could look like in the future will be addressed. To this end, a big data architecture for archiving energy data will be developed and data-driven business models for presenting the knowledge generated will be conceptualised. The project is being realised in collaboration with OFFIS and the eStream project group.
After a two-month seminar phase, the conceptualisation of the use cases and the first draft of an architecture are already in the starting blocks. In the coming weeks, we will report on the progress of the project and various events via this blog.

Presentation of the seminar topics with strikes
On 1 June, the two-month seminar phase was brought to a close with the presentation of the seminar papers. We met with our supervisors in the block seminar to discuss topics relevant to the project group, such as KDD processes, data mining, Hadoop and Odysseus. The knowledge gained in this way created a standardised knowledge base that we can now continue to work with.
Afterwards, we met within the project group at the BCO to round off the evening with a game of bowling.

You don't have to run, the ball does
Based on this wisdom, we were challenged by the "Empower Generations" project group and VLBA employees to play indoor football at the Donnerschwee sports park on 14 June. We wanted to put our sporting skills to the test, but we soon realised that we had to walk more than we initially thought. Nevertheless, it was a nice change of pace and we look forward to continuing the tradition next term.

Excursion to the KPMG Insight Centre
On 28 July 2017, the VLBA offered us the opportunity to take part in an excursion to the KPMG Insight Center in Frankfurt am Main. Some of our group members took up this offer and made the trip accompanied by Prof Dr Jorge Marx Gomez and the VLBA staff.

In addition to the impressions of the Insight Centre and the current topics of data analytics, the main aim was to gather ideas for the upcoming Master's thesis. The opportunities for Master's theses in the field of data analytics with HANA were therefore a particularly valuable source of knowledge. We would like to thank KPMG and the VLBA for the opportunity to take part in this interesting excursion.

The football rematch
After we were challenged to a football match by the "Empower Generations" project group in July, we got our revenge on the artificial turf pitch on the Wechloy campus on 6 September 2017.

The Empower Generations project group will come to an end in October and took the opportunity once again to take part in activities away from the daily routine of the project group. As the VLBA supervisors dominated the pitch at the last meeting, the project groups got together this time for a joint rematch. With success - this time the project groups won against the carers.

Even though there are no lectures during the semester break and some group members plan to use the time for their holidays, the project group programme continues. Some members therefore used their free time to take part in the "Business Intelligence" seminar, which took place from 4 to 13 September 2017.
This seminar covered many topics relevant to us relating to big data and knowledge discovery, and the practical presentations and application exercises made it a good addition to the project group. We therefore recommend that future VLBA project groups also use the time during the semester break for this purpose.
