The Institute of Biology and Environmental Sciences (IBU) at the University of Oldenburg, Germany seeks applications for a

PhD Position in
Saltmarsh Biogeomorphology (m/f/d)

We have a vacancy for a 48-month PhD position (TV-L-E13, 75%) to work in the Vegetation Ecology and Conservation Group of Prof. Thorsten Balke (www.uol.de/en/cove) within the MWK-funded project CoastAdapt.

The position will be offered for the period from 01.09.2024 until 31.08.2028 subject to funding being made available by the MWK. The position offers the possibility for personal scientific qualification [doctorate].

This PhD project aims at predicting lateral saltmarsh dynamics and biogeomorphic feedbacks to better incorporate Nature-based Solutions in coastal defence strategies and planning. You will combine field and greenhouse experiments and use novel monitoring techniques to develop new concepts and models of salt marsh dynamism and regulatory services in a changing climate. The regional focus of your PhD will be the Wadden Sea Coast of Lower Saxony.

Applicants should have an academic university degree (Master or equivalent) in environmental science, biology, ecology, geoecology, oceanography, geography or a related discipline and have an interest in combining ecological, sedimentological and hydrodynamic field methods and experiments. Prior experience of working in intertidal environments is desirable. You should have some prior knowledge in using R.

German language skills will be beneficial to your application but are not a requirement.
